ALLENTOWN, Pa. \u2014 It wasn\u2019t difficult to identify the Philadelphia Flyers\u2019 best rookie line in their 3-2 win on Saturday in the first of two weekend games with the New York Rangers rookies at PPL Center.<\/p>\n
Alex Bump led the way with a goal and an assist, while Cole Knuble was the beneficiary of that assist \u2014 a pass through the seam that he deftly redirected through on his backhand in the second period.<\/p>\n
Their center, Jett Luchanko, wasn\u2019t popping as much as his linemates through two periods. But then, he singlehandedly generated Bump\u2019s game-winning goal in the first minute of the third period, taking control of the puck in the defensive zone, weaving his way past a couple of confused defenders through the neutral zone and finding an available Bump, who zipped it through.<\/p>\n

WHAT A PLAY!!! #FLYERS<\/a> pic.twitter.com\/pFVfh3BhEZ<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 TLY (@TheLibertyYell) September 13, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n After the game, Lehigh Valley Phantoms coach John Snowden, who was manning the bench, credited the 5-foot-11, 187-pound Luchanko and his skating ability and hockey IQ as keys to that line\u2019s success.<\/p>\n \u201cJett as a centerman is skating so good, he takes up space quickly. He\u2019s not the biggest guy in the world, but he closes plays fast because he can get there,\u201d Snowden said. \u201cOnce they got the puck in the O-zone, I just thought they moved it well. They held onto it, they didn\u2019t force plays, they extended possessions.\u201d<\/p>\n It was a promising start to what is a vital season for Luchanko, who turned 20 last month, is now a full-time pro and has a wobbly place in the Flyers\u2019 prospect hierarchy.<\/p>\n To review: the Flyers\u2019 decision to select Luchanko with the 13th pick in 2024 was questioned by some in the moment, as the club passed on other players with perceived higher upsides, according to many draft pundits. Those criticisms have only grown louder over the past two years considering the development of some of those players.<\/p>\n The Flyers traded down a spot from the 12th slot, allowing the Minnesota Wild to snag defenseman Zeev Buium, who was moved as part of the package for Quinn Hughes and who just signed an eight-year, $75 million contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks. Konsta Helenius, a center selected by Buffalo with the 14th pick, made a significant late-season impact with the Sabres in the regular season and the playoffs after managing 62 points in 63 games in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. He\u2019ll be a key player for that up-and-coming club this season.<\/p>\n Conversely, Luchanko\u2019s progress has been uneven. He\u2019s coming off a disappointing junior season, posting just seven goals and 36 assists for 43 points in 38 games split between Guelph and Brantford. In the OHL playoffs with Brantford, Luchanko had seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in 15 games. Luchanko also didn\u2019t do much for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships, with one assist in seven games in last season\u2019s tournament and one goal in five games in 2025.<\/p>\n When asked if he ever thinks specifically about those two players taken immediately before and after him, Luchanko demurred. \u201cNot really,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone has different paths, and I think for me, I just focus on my stuff day to day. That\u2019s the way I look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n Outside observers are skeptical that Luchanko will ultimately become a high-end NHL player. Corey Pronman\u2019s recent 2024 re-draft<\/a> slots Luchanko at 37th overall, or early second round, while Luchanko was left off of Pronman\u2019s list of the league\u2019s best players and prospects under the age of 23<\/a> (Pronman still projects Luchanko as a \u201chighly likable<\/a> bottom six center.\u201d) Scott Wheeler did not have Luchanko on his rundown of the top 100 drafted NHL prospects<\/a>, a list that included Porter Martone at No. 3 and defenseman David Jiricek at No. 97.<\/p>\n But there are a couple of reasons not to write Luchanko off just yet.<\/p>\n The first is his health. Luchanko recently had surgery in his core\/groin area to repair a nagging injury that had apparently been hindering him for about a year and a half. He missed Flyers development camp each of the past two summers.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just a little nagging thing, little bits at a time,\u201d Luchanko said before Saturday\u2019s game. \u201cJust was enough to kind of wanted to get it dealt with.\u201d<\/p>\n Why not get the surgery sooner?<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think it was enough really for me to be able to say I want to sit out,\u201d Luchanko said. \u201cI just think I could still play to a good ability. Obviously, you want to be out there as much as you can.\u201d<\/p>\n Flyers director of player development Riley Armstrong looks at Luchanko\u2019s injury struggles from two different angles. On one hand, Luchanko toughing it out \u201cis awesome,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have a kid that can push through a little bit of pain here and there.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, it was adversely affecting his game, according to Armstrong, so perhaps the soft-spoken Luchanko should have been a bit more forthcoming.<\/p>\n \u201cI think as we\u2019ve gotten to know Jett and his personality, he\u2019s quiet. He hides some things,\u201d Armstrong said. \u201cEvery time he put his foot on the gas to go skate is where he would start to feel it flare up in his mid-pelvic area. The skating part is such a big part of Jett\u2019s game, I think he started to pull back. When you\u2019re dealing with that stuff, it\u2019s in the back of your head, like, you\u2019re going to get hit, you\u2019re kind of pulling out of areas where usually you would see him drive through those areas.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s more. While the Flyers couldn\u2019t control Luchanko\u2019s health, they could control which league he played in. And, in hindsight, putting Luchanko on their opening night roster, as they did in each of the last two years, falls somewhere between questionable and irresponsible. It\u2019s possible that this set Luchanko back, too, from a mental standpoint.<\/p>\n In 2024, it was then-coach John Tortorella who strongly believed that Luchanko\u2019s speed \u2014 his greatest asset \u2014 was necessary for their unremarkable lineup. In mid-October ahead of a game against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, Tortorella quipped: \u201cI\u2019ll play him against anybody.\u201d Shortly after that, though, Luchanko was back in Guelph after going scoreless in four NHL games for Tortorella\u2019s club.<\/p>\n Last season, keeping Luchanko on the NHL roster never made sense from the outset. Coach Rick Tocchet seemed reluctant to give Luchanko much responsibility in the preseason, and in another four scoreless regular-season NHL games, Luchanko averaged just 8:58 of ice time \u2014 five minutes less, on average, than the previous year.<\/p>\n Luchanko acknowledged that \u201cit definitely is\u201d complicated to return to juniors after playing NHL games.<\/p>\n \u201cDefinitely some adjustments, especially, I would say, on the ice,\u201d he said. \u201cA lot of differences within just the game itself.\u201d<\/p>\n Now, though, Luchanko knows he\u2019ll be in either Philadelphia or Lehigh Valley for the duration of 2026-27 \u2014 the latter being his most likely destination, to start.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a completely different feeling for him.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s definitely more exciting, more comfortable knowing that it\u2019s more predictable on where I\u2019m going to end up versus last year,\u201d said Luchanko, who was traded from Guelph to Brantford in November. \u201cTo kind of know that, and just to be here and be getting ready to get settled in at some point \u2014 (I\u2019ll) work my hardest, and hopefully good things will come from that.\u201d<\/p>\n Assuming Luchanko starts with the Phantoms, Snowden and his staff will get the first crack at molding him as a pro. The Flyers need to get Luchanko\u2019s development back on track, and that means skating him heavy minutes and in all kinds of situations in the AHL, likely for several months and perhaps for the entire season. Luchanko played on both the power play and penalty kill against the Rangers rookies in what was likely a harbinger of things to come.<\/p>\n Snowden would like to see Luchanko take more risks offensively and be a little more selfish, essentially echoing what just about everyone else in the organization has been saying about the pass-first, defensively adept Luchanko since he became Flyers property.<\/p>\n \u201cFor a player like him, who\u2019s got offensive upside \u2014 he\u2019s really good 200 feet, he\u2019s a very responsible player \u2014 we talked about we want to really push the offense with him,\u201d Snowden said. \u201c(When) you\u2019re playing 18 to 20 minutes a night, you\u2019re getting 25 to 30 touches in the game (in the AHL) \u2026 that\u2019s going to benefit him.\u201d<\/p>\n Armstrong said he wants to see Luchanko \u201cjust go play. Go play. It\u2019s crazy what confidence does for a player, as well. Once you start to feel it, all of a sudden things just start clicking, and maybe people aren\u2019t doubting him anymore, and they\u2019re jumping on the Jett Luchanko train with me. Hopefully, it comes soon enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
