Marvel\u2019s failure to launch its Blade<\/a> reboot starring Mahershala Ali is easily one of the biggest stains on the company\u2019s reputation. Even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige<\/a> said he felt \u201clike a gigantic loser and a failure that we didn\u2019t get [Ali\u2019s Blade] off the ground.\u201d And even though Ali has now \u201cmoved on<\/a>\u201d from the project, he says there is one positive thing that came out of it.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Deadline<\/a> at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ali confirmed that he trained for over a year to play the Daywalker, and it was all on Marvel\u2019s dime. That training turned out to be crucial for his role as a devout Muslim assassin\u2014whose weapon of choice is a sword\u2014in director Bassam Tariq\u2019s upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really grateful,\u201d Ali said. \u201c[Marvel] helped pay for [Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother], so thank you. We couldn\u2019t have afforded to\u2014there\u2019s no way we coulda did this film and I got to go train for a year. So at this point, I\u2019m so grateful that they made a wonderful contribution to our film.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a remarkably positive spin on the disappointing situation, but Ali is still firm that he will no longer be involved with Blade, even if Marvel does somehow manage to get the reboot moving again. \u201cI\u2019m done,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m over that.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end, though, Ali might have come out on top with Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. After its premiere at TIFF, the film is certified fresh with 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> and a rating of 85, indicating \u201cuniversal acclaim,\u201d on Metacritic<\/a>. That\u2019s something no Marvel movie has ever achieved\u2014not even the Oscar-winning Black Panther<\/a>. And while it\u2019s true that it\u2019s still early days for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, and more reviews as the film approaches its wide release could potentially lower that score, things seem to be looking good for the two-time Oscar-winning Ali.<\/p>\n
