President Donald Trump met privately with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman backstage at the Republican midterm convention on Thursday, days after a former researcher for the company publicly accused<\/a> both it and rival Anthropic of acting irresponsibly and \u201cgambling with our lives,\u201d according to three people familiar with the meeting.<\/p>\n

Altman requested the meeting with the president, according to one of the people, and only a brief overview of the discussion \u2014 mainly centered on artificial intelligence and its growing power \u2014 was provided to MS NOW.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the days since, the two men have staked out sharply different positions on whether frontier AI development should slow down.<\/p>\n

Altman posted on Sunday night that<\/a> slowing the pace \u201cwill be well worth this cost; no amount of American competitive pressure should justify recklessness, or let capabilities get ahead of alignment and monitoring.\u201d Altman also over the weekend said OpenAI will delay going public this year, citing safety concerns.<\/p>\n

Altman was not alone. In a rare show of agreement, he, Elon Musk and Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei each argued over the weekend that AI development needs to slow before the technology outpaces human control.<\/p>\n

Trump struck a different note on Monday. In a post on Truth Social, he dismissed<\/a> the idea of AI guardrails, saying the only control the technology requires is a strong and smart president. In a second post<\/a>, he said regulating the industry would lead to \u201coblivion and bankruptcy,\u201d and called AI \u201cthe greatest economic development engine in history.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president has long argued that regulation should not impede AI innovation. Shortly after returning to office in January 2025, he revoked a Biden-era directive that set parameters around the technology. In December, he signed an executive order that would establish a federal framework that would create a national standard and pre-empt state regulation. To win the AI race, the order said, \u201cUnited States AI companies must be free to innovate without cumbersome regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n
