{"id":848301,"date":"2026-09-15T05:52:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T05:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/848301\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T05:52:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T05:52:17","slug":"an-accidental-impact-crater-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/848301\/","title":{"rendered":"An Accidental Impact Crater Discovery\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are roughly 200 confirmed impact structures on Earth, but geologists estimate that <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.epsl.2015.06.009\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds more<\/a> lurk undiscovered. Now, there\u2019s at least one more\u2014and a large one, at that\u2014in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/metsoc2026\/pdf\/5369.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed bin<\/a>, spotted by an amateur astronomer planning a camping trip to Quebec.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, Jo\u00ebl Lapointe was prepping for a camping trip to the remote C\u00f4te-Nord region when he noticed a <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/3PzkKFUDbJnQFrF68\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">circular feature<\/a> in online satellite maps near Lake Marsal. Suspecting that the depression might be an impact crater, he contacted experts in both Europe and North America. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His questions led a team of French researchers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/metsoc2024\/pdf\/6009.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">list the lake<\/a> area as the center of a possible 11th-known impact structure in Quebec at a meeting of the Meteoritical Society in 2024\u2014which eventually led to the involvement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacerocks.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gordon Osinski<\/a>, a planetary geologist at Western University and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/impact.uwo.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Impact Earth<\/a> database. Osinski was initially skeptical. But with his curiosity piqued, he decided to organize an expedition to the remote site in October 2025 to investigate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osinski and colleagues arrived by floatplane and quickly found themselves in unforgiving terrain. The plane couldn&#8217;t reach the shore, and the researchers had to wade across 50 meters (165 feet) of water to reach land while laden with gear. The terrain, meanwhile, was rugged, swampy, teeming with bugs, and covered by what Osinski described as &#8220;deep, twisty, gnarly vegetation.&#8221; Despite having conducted extensive fieldwork on six continents, he described the conditions as among the most challenging he had ever experienced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous geologic mapping suggested that the <a href=\"https:\/\/geology.com\/rocks\/breccia.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">breccia rocks<\/a> in the area were the product of a funnel-shaped volcanic feature known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/diatreme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diatreme<\/a>\u2014a pipeline of fragmented rock formed by explosive eruptions of magma. Yet by the second day, the researchers had identified distinctive features called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.edu\/epo\/resources\/impact-craters\/impact-rocks\/shatter-cones\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shatter cones<\/a> in many rock outcrops\u2014a sign that the structure was actually an impact crater. &#8220;It&#8217;s the only unequivocal evidence of an impact event that you can see in the field with the naked eye,&#8221; Osinski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The object that struck was large enough to create a <a href=\"https:\/\/marsed.asu.edu\/mep\/craters\/complex-craters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complex crater structure<\/a> that spanned 25 kilometers (16 miles), complete with a <a href=\"https:\/\/impact.uwo.ca\/glossary\/central-uplift\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">central uplift<\/a> and tall cliffs marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/evelyngeorneys.com\/2012\/11\/18\/geology-word-of-the-week-c-is-for-columnar-jointing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">columnar jointing<\/a>. Were an object of a similar size to strike Quebec today, it would cause &#8220;regional devastation on a scale that would wipe out major cities and have global climate impacts,&#8221; Osinski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rock samples indicated that the impact crater likely formed about 390 million years ago, about 100 million years before <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aar4058\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a surge in cratering<\/a> on Earth that may be associated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/nasas-moon-data-sheds-light-on-earths-asteroid-impact-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with collisions<\/a> in the asteroid belt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After consultations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/reseauaffairesnordiques.spn.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/companies\/conseil-des-innu-de-ekuanitshit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Innu Council of Ekuanitshit<\/a>, the research team is calling the crater Uhackatik. While the team considers the crater essentially confirmed, a <a href=\"https:\/\/meteoritical.org\/society\/leadership\/impact-cratering-committee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meteoritical Society committee<\/a> is expected to formally recognize the site as an impact crater when it next meets. This is the largest impact crater discovered since the 31-kilometer Hiawatha structure was <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/crater-lurks-beneath-the-ice-144279\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osinski is a member of NASA&#8217;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/news.westernu.ca\/2023\/08\/artemis-iii-geology\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis Geology Team<\/a> and helps astronauts with geology training, but he doesn&#8217;t expect to see astronauts at Uhackatik anytime soon because of how difficult it is to reach. There&#8217;s a younger, more accessible impact crater in Labrador\u2014Kameshtashtan (also called<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/violent-formation-for-mistastin-lake-148491\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Mistastin Lake<\/a>)\u2014where astronauts have done geology training <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/blog\/2023\/09\/19\/15-photos-of-lunar-geology-training-in-canada.asp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the past<\/a>, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Lapointe, tipping off the scientific community to the new crater is something he&#8217;ll long remember. He told <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.citynews.ca\/2026\/07\/19\/pit-found-quebecer-390-million-years-old-meteorite-impact-crater\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CityNews<\/a> he was &#8220;over the Moon&#8221; when the researchers confirmed it was really a crater. &#8220;I encourage everyone to not ignore intuition or an observation, even if it isn\u2019t part of your field of expertise,&#8221; he told <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/2268642\/cratere-meteorite-cote-nord-decouvert-citoyen\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/2268642\/cratere-meteorite-cote-nord-decouvert-citoyen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another outlet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Citizen scientists hoping to leave their mark on the science world have <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/citizen-science\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plenty of opportunities<\/a> through NASA.
