\n President Donald Trump spent Monday angrily rejecting calls from AI industry leaders for more government regulation on their cutting-edge models<\/a>, making clear in a daylong string of social media posts he considers outpacing China and preserving AI-driven economic gains a higher priority than addressing growing public concerns.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump asserted a \u201cSICK conspiracy\u201d was afoot to undermine AI and claimed his oversight alone was enough to prevent models from going rogue. He called concerns a \u201cHOAX,\u201d comparing the technology to the \u201cGlobal Warming Scam\u201d and the investigation of possible ties between his campaign and the Russian government. He also renewed his support for the data centers that power AI, despite their political unpopularity.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe people that say AI is going to destroy the World, and that Data Centers are bad for your neighborhood, are the same people that said, just a short time ago, that the World would be extinguished by \u2018Climate Change,\u2019\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cThat HOAX never worked out for them, and now they\u2019re on to the next one.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump had posted six times on the matter by Monday evening, reflecting an issue that has quickly come to dominate political debate<\/a> in the United States. He also placed a telephone call to Jensen Huang, the CEO of chipmaker Nvidia, to declare \u201cthe robots will not be taking over.\u201d Huang, a fellow opponent of industry regulation who was appearing onstage at a conference, put the call on speakerphone to amplify Trump\u2019s rebuttals.\n <\/p>\n

\n The president\u2019s fierce pushback after a weekend spent at his golf resort in Ireland reflected a series of conversations he held with advisers and industry leaders who rejected the new calls by AI leaders for a global slowdown in development, according to people familiar with the matter. Trump told reporters over the weekend he used AI personally, but advisers say that extends mostly to generating images for posting on his social media pages.\n <\/p>\n

\n Others inside the administration, including Vice President JD Vance, also cast doubt on the motivations that led executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei<\/a>, to call for more government oversight.\n <\/p>\n

\n The stance has placed the White House at odds with growing public skepticism of AI and wedged vulnerable Republicans in a tough spot as they work to show voters they take the concerns seriously. Even some White House officials privately say they are worried about Trump\u2019s apparent lack of concern about AI\u2019s dangers \u2014 a position he\u2019s held for months and has been seemingly unmoved by industry warnings.\n <\/p>\n

\n Over four consecutive days, the president has continued to downplay the need for new safety checks. He said Monday the US already has \u201ctremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies!\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe only control or \u2018guardrails\u2019 that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social, where he frequently posts AI-generated images and videos of himself.\n <\/p>\n

\n He said the administration had already prevented AI companies from doing \u201cbad, or potentially bad, \u2018things,\u2019\u201d and singled out Amodei for \u201cnow pretending to be a \u2018perfect little angel.\u2019\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Later Monday, Trump called Huang<\/a>, who has been publicly skeptical about AI doomsday predictions, while the tech leader was speaking a summit in Los Angeles. After Huang put him on speakerphone for the crowd, Trump said he was genetically predisposed to understand the issue because his uncle taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI also have common sense about AI,\u201d Trump added. \u201cThe robots will not be taking over. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world. The whole thing is a hoax.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump has long espoused the benefits of AI, and many industry leaders have contributed financially to some of his priority projects, including his inaugural fund and the ballroom he is building at the White House.\n <\/p>\n

\n AI\u2019s meteoric growth has also led to major stock market gains and buoyed the manufacturing sector through data center construction, both of which Trump points to as evidence of a strong economy under his watch. He called AI \u201cthe golden goose\u201d in another social media post Monday.\n <\/p>\n

\n Yet fears about the technology\u2019s potential to eliminate jobs and AI data centers\u2019<\/a> impact on communities have led to a souring in public sentiment. Recent warnings about security concerns have amplified calls for new guardrails.\n <\/p>\n

\n Vance cast doubt on calls from industry executives for more AI regulation, warning it could amount to a \u201cTrojan horse\u201d by companies that could benefit from new restrictions.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere are obvious risks to AI, there are some benefits to AI,\u201d Vance told reporters at Joint Base Andrews. \u201cI have to say, personally, I feel a little bit weird about the fact that you have so many frontier AI tech companies kind of coming to the government and begging the government to regulate them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Still, Vance acknowledged the new technology comes with risks and said he hopes the White House and Congress would work together to develop guardrails.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI don\u2019t think Americans should be scared of anything. I think we have to be mindful that there are risks, there are downsides to anything, and that\u2019s certainly true of AI,\u201d Vance said before boarding a plane for a campaign swing.\n <\/p>\n

\n White House officials said there would likely be meetings set up this week with administration experts on AI and cybersecurity to discuss potential new regulations on the technology. House Speaker Mike Johnson, speaking Sunday, said he hoped to convene talks with Trump, lawmakers and AI executives to plot a path forward. He said Monday that meeting would probably occur in a week or two, though he cautioned against a rush for congressional action.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere\u2019ll be a deliberate discussion about the responsibility of the companies to maintain safety and what role, if any, the government has to play in that. But again, we do not want to jump in,\u201d the Louisiana Republican said. \u201cThe reflex of legislative bodies is to cover things up with red tape and hyper-regulation. If you do that, then you lose your edge, and that is a national security concern for the American people.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Senate Majority Leader John Thune similarly said he believes there should be \u201cguardrails\u201d for AI to ensure safety but prefers a \u201clight touch\u201d from Washington so the US stays competitive with China.\n <\/p>\n

\n While there is broad agreement from many lawmakers that AI could use basic regulation, they recognize that they face an uphill battle to get something done soon. Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that Congress is \u201cat best, a slow-moving institution. But I would hope that we rise to the occasion.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Republican Sen. John Kennedy said that \u201cnothing is going to happen, in my opinion, until after the midterms.\u201d However, he noted he still intends to introduce legislation this week aimed at requiring companies to have an AI \u201ckill switch.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt just says all of you have to have a kill switch so you can shut this thing down if your model becomes the Terminator,\u201d the Louisiana lawmaker told reporters.\n <\/p>\n

\n A new effort was also underway among US officials to beef up planned discussions about AI with Chinese leader Xi Jinping when he travels to Washington for a state visit next week. Trump has been eagerly preparing for the occasion, including by finishing up renovation work on the North Portico and a new helipad on the South Lawn.\n <\/p>\n

\n In one of his Monday social media posts<\/a>, Trump claimed that Xi \u201cannounced that China will be doing absolutely nothing to stand in the way of AI, or its future.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n When the two men last met in Beijing in May, they discussed AI guardrails but produced limited results. Last week the Chinese Ministry of Commerce<\/a> said the two leaders had agreed to set up an intergovernmental dialogue on AI.\n <\/p>\n
