ESPN has booked NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson on Tuesday\u2019s 6pm ET \u201cSportsCenter\u201d broadcast to \u201cpresent the case for opposing\u201d the Protect College Sports Act. The booking of Johnson follows ESPN facing backlash over having U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on \u201cCollege GameDay\u201d<\/a> on Saturday for 10 minutes to speak in favor of the bill. The evening midweek audience of Tuesday\u2019s \u201cSportsCenter\u201d is \u201ccertainly going to be smaller than the next edition of Gameday,\u201d but ESPN said that it \u201cpreferred getting the opposing viewpoint onscreen earlier in case the Senate votes on the bill before Saturday\u201d (PUCK, 9\/14<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Cruz, the Senate Commerce chair and ranking member U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), on Monday said that their chamber \u201cwas \u2018on the cusp\u2019 of passing\u201d the PCSA, but the measure\u2019s success is \u201cstill unclear.\u201d Cruz, speaking alongside Cantwell on Monday, said, \u201cWe\u2019re on the one-yard line.\u201d The duo, who co-authored the bill<\/a>, wants to see an \u201cinitial floor vote as soon as this week, but acknowledged it could get punted to next week.\u201d The legislation could be the \u201cmost significant measure the chamber passes before the midterms,\u201d though it faces opposition despite Cruz and Cantwell\u2019s latest negotiations to \u201cwin bipartisan support.\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) was \u201cless confident Monday about the future of the bill.\u201d He said they \u201cdon\u2019t know\u201d if they have 60 votes in support of the bill (POLITICO, 9\/14<\/a>).<\/p>\n
