Paul Scholes has raised his doubts about Manchester United<\/a> goalkeeper Senne Lammens, just days after former Old Trafford coach Rene Meulensteen named the player that the club\u2019s co-owners, INEOS, should have signed to replace the Belgian.<\/p>\n

Lammens<\/a> has established himself as the number one goalkeeper for Man Utd after joining from Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2025 for \u00a318.1million.<\/p>\n

The Belgium international goalkeeper said at the time: \u201cI am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a real dream come true.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past few years have been an amazing journey, it\u2019s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lammens has made 38 appearances for Man Utd so far this season.<\/p>\n

In those matches, the 24-year-old has conceded 48 goals and kept nine clean sheets.<\/p>\n

Man Utd legend Scholes<\/a>, though, has not been hugely impressed with Lammens and has suggested that Michael Carrick\u2019s side will not win the Premier League title with the Belgian in goal.<\/p>\n

Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast<\/a>: \u201cWhat team have you seen win the\u00a0Premier League\u00a0without a top-class goalkeeper?<\/p>\n

\u201cLammens might be that; I don\u2019t know; I think the jury\u2019s probably still out on that, and then you build from the back four, like Arsenal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the way Arsenal started three or four years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefensively, they have been absolutely brilliant.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need a top-class goalkeeper.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think of Liverpool\u2019s team with Alisson, City\u2019s teams with\u2026 Raya at Arsenal, Man United\u00a0with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve all got brilliant, brilliant goalkeepers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou start from the back, of course you do.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether Michael has just got to be patient and wait for that, I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rene Meulensteen wanted Man Utd to sign Unai Simon<\/p>\n

Last week, former Man Utd coach Meulensteen also raised doubts about Lammens and said that the Red Devils should have signed Unai Simon from Athletic Bilbao in the summer transfer window.<\/p>\n

TEAMtalk quoted Meulensteen as saying on September 8: \u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong, he had a really good season, he made some remarkable saves and he helped United a lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWould I name him in the same breath as Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar, David de Gea?<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Can he get there? Not sure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt it because I always do my due diligence on things and one of the things I felt with him, he\u2019s still young, but obviously what happened with him at the World Cup is something I identified in him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think really critical people will probably look at him with the first goal against Everton, near post.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, if you talk about strengthening, you talk about the two most important people on the pitch: the goalkeeper and the striker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf one can sort goals out and the other can make sure he keeps clean sheets, you\u2019ve got a good chance of winning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meulensteen added: \u201cI thought it would have been a really good bet to get him, I would have gone for Unai Simon from Athletic Bilbao.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so impressive, for me, and we played him in a friendly with Iraq and he was so impressive throughout that whole World Cup campaign of Spain.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so on the front foot, reading the game well, managing that backline and he made every save when he was called upon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you then get is a World Cup winner with a presence and I don\u2019t think Lammens has got that yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he can get there then it has to be on the basis of really good performances and consistency.\u201d<\/p>\n
