Deep in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in 1933, a group of men trek through dangerous terrain while carrying hefty packs of stolen gold, forced into transporting it for the profit of others. Beyond the environment, they face danger both from the gun-wielding thugs assigned to monitor them, ensuring they won\u2019t abscond with the fortune, and from the equally lethal assailants lurking behind the trees, who know what they hold and aim to take it for themselves. A nerve-shredding tale of adventure and suspense, The Weight harkens back to old-fashioned fare like John Huston\u2019s The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre<\/a> and William Friedkin\u2019s Sorcerer<\/a>: tales of hardened men who have fallen on troubled times, backed into a corner where the only way out is through seemingly insurmountable odds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While wearing its influences on its sleeve, nothing about The Weight comes off as cheap imitation, as director Padraic McKinley takes great care in developing this world and these characters long before we see a single bar of gold. We first meet Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) as a father out of work, doing his best to take care of his young daughter (Avy Berry) at the height of the Great Depression. Despite his keen mind and inventive skills, things look perilous for Murphy, though he doesn\u2019t let that show to his daughter. With gumption and perseverance, they push on, until an encounter that leads to him unknowingly assaulting a couple of disguised police officers lands him in a prison camp and his daughter in a group home, destined for adoption long before he\u2019s due for release.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On grueling assignment with other men as they attempt to move a massive boulder, Murphy comes up with a shrewd plan to achieve their goal after sheer force proves obsolete, which strikes the attention of the tough and slimy Warden Clancy (a marvelously menacing Russell Crowe). Clancy proposes a deal to Murphy: Take on the task of transporting gold that Clancy\u2019s men have pulled out of the mine they\u2019re working on before President Roosevelt\u2019s people come to claim it as part of a new government order, and the warden will immediately release Murphy in time for him to reunite with his daughter. There\u2019s no choice here for Murphy; it\u2019s time to saddle up and assemble his crew.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The sociopolitical undercurrent of The Weight loads in heavy themes around the exploitation of prison labor and the division of class, as these men who are seen as completely disposable are now tasked with securing the excessive wealth of their overseers, shuttling it away from New Deal policies ostensibly aimed at the poor. McKinley\u2019s film is a rip-roaring adventure of the highest order, while always having in the background the knowledge that every predicament these men are placed in comes in the service of fatcats above their heads fighting over money these guys could never even dream of possessing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for them, those people (whether it\u2019s the warden and his men, or Roosevelt and his) are the ones with all the power, and they know how to wield it without mercy. These stakes make for a story driven primarily by character, with breathless action set pieces broken up by thoughtful moments between the men (and a Native American woman who joins them, played by Julia Jones, whose craftiness matches Murphy\u2019s) as they share their stories and perspectives on the world around them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With decades of experience in the film industry as an editor on eclectic projects including 17 Again, Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and Jude Law\u2019s Alfie, McKinley makes his directorial debut with an immediate understanding of what it takes to get stomachs right up into the throats of viewers. The filmmaker expertly utilizes the forest setting to create an atmosphere where danger lurks around every corner\u2014rom the elements as well as the men who may be waiting to seize an opportunity for gain\u2014and the immersive sound design punctuates the visceral impact of the action when it emerges. This is a down-and-dirty picture that feels ripped from the \u201970s, with a standout midfilm sequence where the squad has to delicately toss the gold bars across a rickety bridge one by one. It\u2019s the kind of breathless, hear-a-pin-drop cinema that recalls the suspense of Sorcerer\u2018s similarly staged bridge obstacle, and McKinley\u2019s reliance on real locations and practical effects archives an authenticity that places us right there with the characters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Through it all, The Weight is shouldered by a sturdy Ethan Hawke, turning in a performance of tremendous depth. The actor is perhaps best known for wordy performances in films like the Before <\/a>trilogy<\/a>, or his Oscar-nominated work in last year\u2019s Blue Moon, but here he shows how much strength he\u2019s able to harness still when hardly uttering a word. Hawke\u2019s Murphy is gruff and quiet, hardened by the plight he\u2019s endured, yet retaining a compassion and a tenderness that makes him a loving father and a defender of those he\u2019s pulled together into his makeshift unit of misfits. When Murphy proclaims that he\u2019s doing all of this to get back to his daughter, there\u2019s zero doubt that he means it, turning what could be a stock motivation into a passionate drive rooted at the core of this man. It\u2019s the weight that keeps him going, more precious than gold.\u00a0<\/p>\n
