A radiographer discovered she had leukemia<\/a> after brushing off her unexplained bruises<\/a> as pole dancing injuries.<\/p>\n

Megan Wright, 28, lived a normal active life until earlier this year when she noticed large bruises on her arms which took up to a month to disappear.<\/p>\n

Megan, from Dundee, Scotland, visited her GP for an ongoing knee injury in February and casually mentioned the bruising as well as tiredness<\/a> she thought might be a sign of anemia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Her GP arranged a blood test<\/a> and hours later she was told she had either lymphoma<\/a> or leukemia.<\/p>\n

Megan underwent a bone marrow biopsy which confirmed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).<\/p>\n

Megan said: \u201cIt was just a whirlwind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d gone from just going to the GP for something completely different to being diagnosed with leukemia within days.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve still got quite a lot of treatment to go, but I\u2019m in remission, which is obviously really good.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt fit and healthy. I was doing pole fitness, going out with my friends and just living my normal life.<\/p>\n

Megan, who is sharing her story during Blood Cancer Awareness Month, initially put her tiredness<\/a> down to slightly increased working hours.<\/p>\n

After her blood test at the GP, she had a 20-minute-long nosebleed<\/a> \u2013 another sign of ALL.<\/p>\n

Following her hospital admission, a consultant said she needed further tests to determine if she had lymphoma \u2013 cancer<\/a> in the lymphatic system \u2013 or leukemia \u2013 cancer in the blood<\/a> and bone marrow.<\/p>\n

Three days later she was diagnosed with leukemia.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cIt was very hard to process because it all happened so quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey couldn\u2019t delay treatment, so they had to start me on chemotherapy<\/a> straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since her diagnosis in February, Megan has undergone two five-week cycles of chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

A bone marrow biopsy following her second cycle showed no evidence of leukemia, meaning Megan is currently in remission and does not need a stem cell transplant.<\/p>\n

She still has further chemotherapy ahead, including additional rounds of treatment designed to reduce the risk of the disease returning.<\/p>\n

At 28, she feels caught between the services aimed at teenagers and young adults and the predominantly older patients she sees on the hematology ward.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI feel like I\u2019m in a weird age bracket. I\u2019m too old for some of the teenage cancer support, but I\u2019m also one of the youngest people on the hematology ward.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s now starting to get back to the life she enjoyed before her diagnosis. She has returned to her pole fitness studio for the first time since her diagnosis.<\/p>\n

And she has just got engaged \u2013 after several months dominated by hospital appointments and chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI\u2019d love to get back to pole fitness properly and get back to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just very tired at the moment, so I can\u2019t do the same amount as I used to. But hopefully once all this is over, I\u2019ll get back to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI probably wouldn\u2019t have thought anything of it if people at work hadn\u2019t said I should mention it while at the GP. But I\u2019m really glad I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
