But coach Marco Sturm acknowledged last week<\/a> that conversations remain ongoing among him, the top brass, and players regarding the team\u2019s next captain \u2014 with Pastrnak and McAvoy standing as the two most obvious candidates to get the \u201cC\u201d stitched on their sweater.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re still in the process. It\u2019s been a lot of chatting, a lot of communication, but I think it\u2019s always better when everyone comes back, and back in Boston, back in the same place, and sit down at one table,\u201d Sturm said<\/a>. \u201cAnd like I said, we\u2019ve been communicating, but we\u2019ll make a decision here before the season starts and we go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u200bSpeaking to reporters last week, McAvoy praised Pastrnak\u2019s leadership and the way the duo took the reins as Boston\u2019s go-to players alongside a reworked leadership group that included Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, and others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we had a great thing, myself and Dave,\u201d McAvoy said. \u201cWe lean on each other a lot. We\u2019ve been here a long time and we\u2019ve both been able to learn from the same group of guys, the same people who are already up in the rafters. \u200b<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very lucky to have had those people teach us the ways and how we can try to keep the culture going even though the names are changing, the generations are changing. The kids are more different now. It\u2019s a constant evolution, but I feel like we did a really good job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given Pastrnak and McAvoy\u2019s established credentials, extended tenures with the franchise, and the seemingly close competition when it comes to both players vying for the \u201cC\u201d, could there be bitterness or any sort of \u201cfriction\u201d generated for whichever player doesn\u2019t earn the captaincy?<\/p>\n

McAvoy pushed back against such a question at Warrior Ice Arena \u2014 noting that there have been several other established leaders with the Bruins who either didn\u2019t wear the \u201cC\u201d or had to wait a long time to earn such a title.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, I don\u2019t,\u201d McAvoy said. \u201cI mean, look, we\u2019ve been here a long time, the two of us,\u201d McAvoy said. \u201cDave\u2019s going to be, I think, a Hall of Famer. I think he\u2019ll be retired here. He\u2019s done so much. Who he is as a person and as a teammate and what he means to this organization and team, I love him to death. He would be extremely deserving. Whatever happens, it\u2019s out of my hands, but I don\u2019t think there would be any friction. \u2026 We lean on everybody.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how Zee [Zdeno Chara] did it, that\u2019s how Bergy [Patrice Bergeron] did it. It\u2019s not something that you just do alone, so I think it was a good exercise last year and collaboration in how we wanted to do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n
