{"id":849567,"date":"2026-09-16T08:26:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/849567\/"},"modified":"2026-09-16T08:26:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T08:26:15","slug":"bear-attacks-reach-10-in-colorado-after-2-separate-attacks-over-the-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/849567\/","title":{"rendered":"Bear attacks reach 10 in Colorado after 2 separate attacks over the weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"sub-text\">Video from Sept. 1, in Arvada, Colorado, shows a bear ripping through a gate to get to three trash cans in search of food in the middle of the night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">THE TAKEAWAY<\/p>\n<p>Two women were attacked by bears over the weekend in Colorado.Bear encounters continue to surge across the state.Wildlife officials are reminding residents to keep trash secured and lock doors to discourage bear break-ins.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">COLORADO &#8211; Bear attacks are at an all-time high in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/colorado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Colorado<\/a> as bears continue to seek food in residential areas across the state.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Two different women were attacked just two days apart on Friday in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/colorado\/south-fork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">South Fork<\/a> and Sunday in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/colorado\/durango\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Durango<\/a>, by a black bear.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Colorado Parks and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wildlife<\/a> (CPW) said these two incidents bring the confirmed number of bear attacks on humans in the state to 10, the most on record.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/drought-conditions-fuel-increase-bear-encounters-residential-areas-across-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">BEAR SIGHTINGS SPIKE ACROSS THE WEST AS DROUGHT SENDS ANIMALS ON A FEEDING FRENZY<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the first attack happened at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, when a black bear bit a woman&#8217;s arm while she was inside a tent at Park Creek Campground.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"668\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2204750681.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">A black bear walks between two homes in a neighborhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"sub-text\"> (Red Huber\/Orlando Sentinel\/Tribune News Service via Getty Images \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The woman told CPW she felt something hit the tent before she was bitten. She said she couldn\u2019t see the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">animal<\/a> but said it was large and she heard a growl. CPW determined there wasn&#8217;t a continued public <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">health<\/a> threat after the attack.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_10\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/worlds-most-endangered-marine-mammal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">THE RACE TO SAVE THE WORLD&#8217;S MOST ENDANGERED MARINE MAMMAL ISN&#8217;T OVER YET<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;The bite in this incident was more likely an act of surprise than aggression,&#8221; Area Wildlife Manager Rick Basagoitia of the Monte Vista office said. &#8220;There is no history of conflict or damage. This location is isolated and now closed. She said she felt the bear\u2019s paw hit her stomach.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_13\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/help-wanted-identifying-hemorrhagic-disease-deadly-missouri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">THIS STATE NEEDS YOUR HELP IN IDENTIFYING CASES OF A DEADLY DEER DISEASE CAUSED BY GNATS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">After being hit, the woman screamed and sat up, CPW said, and the bear ran to the foot of her bed, pausing briefly before exiting her room through the window.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The girl said the bear immediately re-entered the room, so she stood up and screamed and yelled until it turned around and left again, for good this time.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">She self-treated the scratch injuries to her stomach, and CPW responded. The next morning, a bear entered another residence nearby. CPW said officers intend to catch and remove the bear.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;This is a human health and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fxw_earth-space_article_main-content_article-body_2_17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">safety<\/a> issue that we take seriously,&#8221; CPW Area Wildlife Manager Adrian Archuleta of the Durango office said. &#8220;This bear has exhibited behavior that threatens human health and safety. It has shown that it is not afraid to enter homes multiple times now, and it is likely this behavior will continue.
