Ridley Scott\u2019s Blade Runner was set in 2019, Denis Villeneuve\u2019s \u201cBlade Runner 2049\u201d took place thirty years later but still incorporated elements of the original Scott film.<\/p>\n

With the upcoming Prime Video series \u201cBlade Runner 2099\u201d though, the leap of fifty years from the last film has allowed the series to essentially serve as a soft reboot.<\/p>\n

Speaking with Collider<\/a> recently, the show\u2019s lead star Michelle Yeoh says neither of the previous films are required viewing for the show:<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the most interesting thing I\u2019ve heard so far is that even if you\u2019ve not watched the first two movies \u2013 because in this new generation, the younger audience might not have watched the first one \u2013 you would understand because of the way the story evolves. And I think the complication between the two characters, between Hunter [Schafer] and myself, it\u2019s\u2026 Say no more. [Laughs].\u201d<\/p>\n

The new series portrays a radically transformed Los Angeles where humanity is no longer in control, and the replicants have won after an uprising.<\/p>\n

They are now the power brokers of the city and humans are second-class citizens. Michelle Yeoh stars as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner hunting a group of missing rogue replicants while approaching the predetermined end of her own lifespan.<\/p>\n

Hunter Schafer plays Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners but must now pretend to be one. She joins Olwen\u2019s search for the missing replicants.<\/p>\n
