{"id":850217,"date":"2026-09-16T21:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T21:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/850217\/"},"modified":"2026-09-16T21:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T21:32:13","slug":"human-brain-cells-transplanted-into-mice-in-most-extensive-integration-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/850217\/","title":{"rendered":"Human brain cells transplanted into mice in \u2018most extensive\u2019 integration ever"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Human brain tissue transplanted into mice that lack a key part of their brains can grow to occupy most of the vacant space and wire into the animals\u2019 nervous systems.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to a study published on 16 September in Nature<a href=\"#ref-CR1\" data-track=\"click\" data-action=\"anchor-link\" data-track-label=\"go to reference\" data-track-category=\"references\">1<\/a>, which describes the most extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-02073-4\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-02073-4\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">integration of human brain cells into an animal<\/a> so far. The experimental strategy overcomes hurdles that have long stymied researchers studying neuropsychiatric illness in laboratory-grown brain tissue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-03238-x\" class=\"u-link-inherit\" data-track=\"select_article\" data-track-action=\"view recommended article\" data-track-context=\"related article widget on news body\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"recommended__image\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/d41586-026-02912-8_24020060.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"recommended__title u-serif\">Human brain cells implanted in rats prompt excitement \u2014 and concern<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hybrid animals offer an unprecedented way to test drugs and study diseases that involve abnormal brain development such as cerebral palsy, says study co-author Sergiu Pa\u0219ca, a neuroscientist at Stanford University in California. \u201cWe now have a very powerful new system\u201d for understanding \u201cwhat makes the human brain unique and uniquely susceptible to disease\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Although creating human\u2013mouse hybrids, or chimeras, can cause discomfort and raise ethical questions for some people, researchers working in this field say that precautions are taken with investigations such as this one. For instance, the work underwent extensive oversight, including review by independent bioethics panels, according to Pa\u0219ca.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the procedure \u2014 carried out days after the mouse pups\u2019 birth, past the point at which the brain\u2019s core wiring is already in place \u2014 also ensures that human cells cannot take over complex thinking, says Madeline Lancaster, a developmental neurobiologist at the University of Cambridge, UK, who was not involved in the study. In fact, behavioural tests revealed that the human tissue did not enhance the rodents\u2019 intellect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal here is clearly not to make a mouse that\u2019s super intelligent \u2014 nor would it be,\u201d she says. The goal here is to have human brain tissue inside a realistic body setting \u201cso you can start using it to understand human neurobiology and human neurological diseases\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Implant impacts<\/p>\n<p>Neuroscientists have grappled for decades with their inability to study living human brain tissue. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-026-01025-6\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-026-01025-6\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human brain organoids<\/a>, which are clusters of neurons grown from human stem cells in Petri dishes, have offered a window into early neurodevelopment, they generally lack blood vessels and do not have a body to send and receive signals from.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Pa\u0219ca and his colleagues showed<a href=\"#ref-CR2\" data-track=\"click\" data-action=\"anchor-link\" data-track-label=\"go to reference\" data-track-category=\"references\">2<\/a> that transplanting human brain organoids into newborn rats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-03238-x\" data-track=\"click\" data-label=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-03238-x\" data-track-category=\"body text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allowed the structures\u2019 neurons to mature and wire into sensory pathways<\/a>. Two years later, the group used those rats to evaluate how effective drugs called antisense oligonucleotides were against Timothy syndrome, a severe genetic condition linked to autism and epilepsy<a href=\"#ref-CR3\" data-track=\"click\" data-action=\"anchor-link\" data-track-label=\"go to reference\" data-track-category=\"references\">3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in those earlier models, the scientists squeezed the human grafts in alongside the rats\u2019 existing, quickly growing brain tissue. So, by the time the human neurons in the organoids began extending to make connections, the rodent brain cells had already claimed most of the available space.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-026-01025-6\" class=\"u-link-inherit\" data-track=\"select_article\" data-track-action=\"view recommended article\" data-track-context=\"related article widget on news body\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"recommended__image\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/d41586-026-02912-8_52244430.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"recommended__title u-serif\">Mini models of the human brain are revealing how this complex organ takes shape<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the latest study, Pa\u0219ca and his team genetically engineered mice so that the precursor cells that would have formed the cerebral cortex did not survive \u2014 leaving some of the brain cavity empty. \u201cFor me, the real innovation is really removing the competition for space,\u201d says Giorgia Quadrato, a developmental neurobiologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. (In humans, the cerebral cortex is the wrinkly, outermost layer of the brain that handles complex thinking and memory.)<\/p>\n<p>Without competition, the human cells blossomed.
