GASTONIA, N.C. (WBTV) – President Donald Trump was scheduled to arrive in the Charlotte area<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon ahead of a rally in Gaston County<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump was expected to speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Gastonia Municipal Airport in support of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley. You can watch his remarks live in the video player up above once the event begins.<\/p>\n

In a social media post, Whatley said he is \u201cthrilled\u201d to welcome Trump to Gastonia, adding, \u201cPresident Trump needs an ally in the Senate and North Carolina needs a fighter. That\u2019s why we will win on November 3!\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatley, the former Republican National Committee chairman, is running against former Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper in the U.S. Senate race on Nov. 3, 2026. President Trump did endorse Whatley<\/a> in the state\u2019s primary election earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Whatley\u2019s campaign came under fire last week after a pastor, who is a convicted sex offender, delivered an opening prayer at a campaign rally that Whatley appeared at. Whatley\u2019s campaign said the candidate did not know the pastor who delivered the prayer, nor was the event planned by the campaign.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Senate race out of North Carolina<\/a> was among the most high-profile races in the state this year. North Carolina represents one of a few opportunities for Democrats to flip a Republican-held congressional seat in the midterms this fall.<\/p>\n

The winner will replace Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who is not seeking reelection in 2026.<\/p>\n

Major traffic impacts in Gaston County<\/p>\n

Significant traffic delays are expected<\/a> across Gaston County on Wednesday ahead of Trump\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n

Police urged<\/a> drivers to plan for afternoon and evening delays, adding that<\/a> the best option is to avoid the area entirely if possible.<\/p>\n

Timeline for Wednesday, Sept. 16<\/p>\n

Officials released the following timeline for road closures:<\/p>\n

10 a.m.:\u00a0Soft road closures begin.5:30 p.m.:\u00a0Full shutdowns take effect and will continue through the evening \u201cas needed.\u201dRoad closures<\/p>\n

Officers said the area around Union Road and Gaston Day School Road will see the heaviest impacts. <\/p>\n

Police said<\/a> the primary areas affected will include:<\/p>\n

South of I-85East of U.S. 321West of South New Hope Road<\/p>\n

Detours will be set up near:<\/p>\n

Union RoadRobinson RoadBud Wilson RoadGaston Day School Road<\/p>\n
