{"id":850571,"date":"2026-09-17T04:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T04:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/850571\/"},"modified":"2026-09-17T04:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T04:32:11","slug":"doctor-reflects-as-rochester-general-hospital-campus-celebrates-70-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/850571\/","title":{"rendered":"Doctor reflects as Rochester General Hospital campus celebrates 70 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rochester, N.Y. \u2014 Rochester General Hospital is marking 70 years at its site on Portland Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital celebrated Wednesday by turning the clock back to 1956, the year the campus opened.<\/p>\n<p>That was also the year Dr. Gerald Holzwasser started his internship at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they opened up here, I was the first intern to work the emergency room,&#8221; Holzwasser said. &#8220;The emergency room had one intern run the whole show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A timeline of Rochester General Hospital's history is displayed during a 70th anniversary celebration at its Portland Avenue campus Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026. (Photo by Mark Schuman\/WHAM)<\/p>\n<p>Holzswasser said he served as a resident at the hospital for another three years and later worked there for 10 years as a radiologist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Wonderful people were here at the time to make us a great place,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>Holzwasser said the hospital has come a long way in the last 70 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s amazing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The world is so different now.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rochester, N.Y. \u2014 Rochester General Hospital is marking 70 years at its site on Portland Avenue.
