{"id":85119,"date":"2025-08-15T16:06:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T16:06:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/85119\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T16:06:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T16:06:07","slug":"hurricane-erin-nears-the-northeast-caribbean-with-heavy-rains-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/85119\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Erin nears the northeast Caribbean with heavy rains expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tropical-storm-erin-hurricane-henriette-e240c15f730ba757b6e736067dbd3383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Erin<\/a> strengthened into a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/hurricanes-and-typhoons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hurricane<\/a> on Friday as it approached the northeast <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/caribbean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caribbean<\/a>, prompting forecasters to warn of possible flooding and landslides.<\/p>\n<p>The storm is expected to remain over open waters, although tropical storm watches were issued for Anguilla and Barbuda, St. Martin and St. Barts, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rains were forecast to start late Friday in Antigua and Barbuda, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and southern and eastern Puerto Rico. Up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) are expected, with isolated totals of up to 6 inches (15 centimeters), according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters also warned of dangerous swells.<\/p>\n<p>The storm was located about 460 miles (740 kilometers) east of the Northern Leeward Islands. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 18 mph (30 kph).<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane specialist and storm surge expert Michael Lowry said Erin is forecast to eventually take a sharp turn northeast that would put it on a path between the U.S. and Bermuda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe forecasts for next week still keep the future hurricane safely east of the mainland U.S.,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Erin, which is the Atlantic season\u2019s first hurricane, is forecast to become a major Category 3 storm late this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The hurricane center noted \u201cthere is still uncertainty about what impacts Erin may bring to portions of the Bahamas, the east coast of the United States, and Bermuda in the long range.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected to affect the U.S. East Coast next week, with waves reaching up to 15 feet (5 meters) along parts of the North Carolina coast that could cause beach erosion, according to Accuweather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErin is forecast to explode into a powerful Category 4 hurricane as it moves across very warm waters in the open Atlantic. Water temperatures at the surface and hundreds of feet deep are several degrees higher than the historical average,\u201d said Alex DaSilva, Accuweather\u2019s lead hurricane expert.<\/p>\n<p>Erin is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s season is once again <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hurricanes-warmer-noaa-doge-storms-climate-forecast-72d92f608967bc213ba9b7ce5cc3e057\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expected to be unusually busy<\/a>.
