Apple\u2019s newly announced Duo\u2014the company\u2019s first flip phone\u2014might have gotten most of the attention at last week\u2019s launch event in Cupertino, but the brand also unveiled the latest iteration of its Apple Watch, along with a slew of upgrades aimed at making it indispensable as a tracker for health and fitness.<\/p>\n

Wearable tech has come a long way since the Apple Watch was first released in 2015, back when the idea of strapping a device onto your body still seemed fairly outlandish. In the era of the Oura ring and the WHOOP, when there are plenty of ways to track your sleep or use data to optimize your workout, the watch needs to work harder to stand out. For Apple, that means leaning into its reputation for high design and deep research.<\/p>\n

The Apple Watch Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds\u201460 times more frequently than older models. It also captures heart rate variability (HRV) 24 times as often, which can help indicate whether you\u2019re sick or stressed. Using this data plus information on your sleep and recent activity, it\u2019s able to give you a readiness score that tells you how hard you should push in your workouts, as well as a \u201chealth age\u201d score that summarizes how well you\u2019re doing with respect to your age. If you\u2019re 40 and your health age score is 35, for example, you can rest easy, but if it\u2019s closer to, say, 45, the watch will give you recommendations for how to bring it down.<\/p>\n

In order to accommodate these sensors, the new watch has a wider surface area on the back for measuring heartbeats, as well as a ring of photodiodes around the edges to pick up light more efficiently. The aesthetic hasn\u2019t changed much\u2014this is still the sleek Apple device we\u2019ve always known\u2014but the brand has brought back its popular ceramic, a tough, appealingly luminescent material forged in a process so elaborate that it sounds like the labors of Hercules. (Apple designers will happily tell you that it\u2019s baked at a temperature hotter than lava, condensed in a chamber with more pressure than the bottom of the ocean, and then literally buffed by diamonds.)<\/p>\n

Other finishes include a handsome dark bronze aluminum, as well as gold and natural titanium. And should you be in the market for a watch for an international superspy, the Herm\u00e9s option includes a sexy chain-link wristband that unsnaps to strap over a wetsuit\u2014useful if you need to leave an elegant dinner by way of scuba.<\/p>\n
