\n\tDuncan Sheik<\/a>, singer of the 1996 hit single \u201cBarely Breathing\u201d and Tony Award-winning composer of Spring Awakening<\/a>, died on Thursday. He was 56.<\/p>\n

\n\tSheik\u2019s mother, Suzanne, confirmed the singer\u2019s death to The New York Times<\/a>, adding that the cause was organ failure. Earlier this week, the singer-composer was in \u201ccritical but stable\u201d<\/a> condition in a hospital and \u201creceiving medical care\u201d following an unspecified health issue.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik. The world has a lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater,\u201d Sheik\u2019s social media account posted Friday. \u201cDuncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, inteligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe New Jersey native, a one-time bandmate of Lisa Loeb when the two attended Brown University together, released his self-titled debut album in 1996. The LP featured the single \u201cBarely Breathing,\u201d which was certified gold and reached Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining on the charts for 55 consecutive weeks. Sheik received a Grammy nod for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the hit song.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile \u201cBarely Breathing\u201d was his only single to reach the Hot 100 chart, Sheik continued to put out music, releasing nine studio albums. One of those LPs \u2014 2001\u2019s Phantom Moon, a tribute of sorts to Nick Drake\u2019s Pink Moon \u2014 paired Sheik with Steven Sater, a poet and songwriter whom he met while practicing Nichiren Buddhism. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pair first collaborated on Sater\u2019s 1999 play Umbrage, with Sheik providing the music to Sater\u2019s lyrics. After Phantom Moon, the two reunited again for what would become their defining work, 2006\u2019s Spring Awakening, a rock musical based on an 1891 German coming-of-age play.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpring Awakening enjoyed a successful off-Broadway and then a two-year Broadway run, winning Best Musical at the Tony Awards in 2007; Sheik himself was awarded Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations at the Tonys, with a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album following soon after.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think he is a genius,\u201d Sheik told Rolling Stone of working with Sater. \u201cHe is \u2018out there,\u2019 eccentric and unique, and that\u2019s why I love him. I try to make sure my music has those qualities in it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tOver the next two decades, Sheik continued to work in the theater both with Sater \u2014 the duo also collaborated on 2019\u2019s Alice in Wonderland musical Alice by Heart \u2014 and others, including providing the music for a theater interpretation of American Psycho.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a version of American Psycho that you could do that is campy, kitschy, and incredibly broad and comic. I wasn\u2019t interested in that,\u201d Sheik told Rolling Stone<\/a> in 2016, the year the musical hit Broadway. \u201cI wanted it to be a little deeper and more ambiguous, weird and strange, and, hopefully, beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSheik also composed the music of plays based on The Taming of the Shrew, The Secret Life of Bees, and Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, an off-Broadway production that was due to debut in the fall; a revival of Spring Awakening is also set to stage off-Broadway this November.<\/p>\n
