Among these obstacles are limitations in hardware, software, and error correction, which stand in the way of developing commercially viable applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuantum bits, or qubits \u2014 the basic units of information in quantum computing \u2014 are incredibly fragile,\u201d said USU physicist <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.usu.edu\/physics\/directory\/faculty\/pan-feng\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Feng Pan<\/a>. \u201cTiny fluctuations in temperature can disturb them and cause computing errors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pan, who studies nanophotonics, believes light may hold the key to solving these challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The assistant professor in USU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.usu.edu\/physics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Physics<\/a> was the recipient of the top research paper award at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory\u2019s 2026 Molecular Foundry Annual User Meeting on Aug. 20-21 in Berkeley, California.
