Pavel Dorofeyev comes to New York fresh off a run to the Stanley Cup Final, having scored the second-most goals (12) in the postseason \u2014 and after signing a seven-year, $77 million deal<\/a> with the Rangers, who gave up three draft picks (two first-rounders) for the rights to a rising star who won\u2019t turn 26 until next month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dorofeyev has gone from Las Vegas, one of the league\u2019s smallest media markets, to Broadway, essentially to replace the perennial leading scorer (Artemi Panarin) of a spotlight franchise that has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years and finished 23rd in the league in scoring last season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No pressure, kid.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he understands what the expectations are,\u201d Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said following Friday\u2019s practice. \u201cIn the short time I\u2019ve gotten to know him, in the conversations I\u2019ve had with him, just observing how he carries himself around his teammates, he\u2019s a confident kid. He\u2019s got a quiet confidence about him. I think he\u2019ll handle it fine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Russian wing \u2014 one of 12 players to score 35-plus goals in each of the past two seasons \u2014 has had nearly three months to prepare for the change brought by the draft-day trade. He has had all summer to embrace the opportunity ahead.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I [learned] I was traded, I felt a lot of different feelings, but in the end I\u2019m grateful for the opportunity that I have to be in an organization like the Rangers,\u201d Dorofeyev said. \u201cIt was a short summer, busy, a lot of changes, but at the same time it\u2019s a great experience. I\u2019m just having fun, and I\u2019m happy to be here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just looking forward to starting the season.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Just two practices into his first training camp with the Rangers, Dorofeyev\u2019s new teammates already have a newfound appreciation for the sniper who might first be approaching his prime.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLethal shooter,\u201d Mika Zibanejad said of Dorofeyev. \u201cYou can tell he\u2019s strong on the puck and he puts himself in positions to shoot. \u2026 The way he\u2019s been finding guys, too, and the way he can finish, he\u2019ll add to the goal-scoring for us, which is going to be huge.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think also it adds another threat that maybe teams haven\u2019t seen in the same way from our power play in the past.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last season, Dorofeyev finished with 20 goals \u2014 plus 10 assists \u2014 on power plays, ranking behind only Dallas\u2019 Wyatt Johnston.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it is him and Mika on those flanks, that\u2019s two shooting threats to kind of pick your poison there,\u201d defenseman Adam Fox said Thursday. \u201cHaving a goal-scorer on the power play, I think that\u2019s one of the biggest threats you can have, and he\u2019s obviously one of the best at it. It\u2019s definitely a nice addition for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dorofeyev has opened camp on the second line, alongside J.T. Miller and Oliver Bjorkstrand, though Sullivan said he plans on playing Dorofeyev at both wings until deciding where he fits best.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The future has just begun.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels better each day, getting comfortable,\u201d Dorofeyev said. \u201cWe have a lot of skill guys, a lot of talented guys that can make great plays.
