A monthly Social Security check may be only one piece of the picture, alongside savings, pensions, part-time work, or a spouse&#8217;s income.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">That makes it easy to confuse a modest Social Security benefit with a modest total income. To understand how many retirees are truly living on less, it helps to separate Social Security benefits from the other money they may receive.  <\/p>\n<p>        What a Social Security Check Does\u2014and Doesn&#8217;t\u2014Reveal          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">About half of retired workers who collect Social Security (50.3%) received less than $2,000 a month in benefits as of December 2025, according to the Social Security Administration. About 61% of female retired workers received less than that amount, compared with 39% of male retired workers.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">But those figures cover benefits paid directly to retired workers. Many more Americans receive Social Security as the spouses, children, or survivors of retired workers. Altogether, more than 70 million Americans received some type of Social Security benefit.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Even then, Social Security is often only part of what a retiree has to live on. Many also draw income from savings, pensions, investments, or work.  <\/p>\n<p>        Why This Matters To You          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">A Social Security check tells you what that program pays, not what a retiree lives on. Other income can substantially change a retiree&#8217;s financial picture.  <\/p>\n<p>        Where Retirees&#8217; Other Income Comes From          <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">A Social Security check is only one source of income for many retirees. When they matched survey responses with tax filings and Social Security records, 46% of respondents had failed to report income from 401(k) and IRA withdrawals.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The same research found that 58% of older Americans rely on Social Security for less than half of their income. Only about 14% depend on it for 90% or more.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">So while a Social Security benefit below $2,000 is common, retirees&#8217; dependence on that benefit varies widely, and two retirees receiving the same-sized check could be in very different financial situations overall.  <\/p>\n<p>       How Many Older Households Live on About $2,000 a Month?         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Even with other sources of retirement income, a sizable share of older households live on relatively little.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">About 22% of households headed by someone 65 or older had income below $25,000 in 2024, according to Census Bureau surveys. That works out to $2,080 a month or less, compared with about 10% of households headed by someone under 65.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The median income for households headed by someone 65 or older was much higher, at about $56,700, or about $4,720 a month. Among households headed by someone 75 or older, the median fell to roughly $47,800.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The financial strain is more pronounced among people living alone. Women 65 and older who lived alone had a median income of $29,500 in 2024, or about $2,455 a month, and 41% had income below $25,000. The median for men living alone was about $35,800.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/the-gender-pay-gap-is-growing-again-why-efforts-to-close-it-are-falling-short-11811849\" data-ylk=\"slk:gender%20gap;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;gender gap&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" class=\"null\">gender gap<\/a> was wider at older ages. Among those 75 and older, it fell to about $27,800, while median income for men living alone remained near $35,000 in both age groups.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Taken together, the data show why there is no easy answer to how many retirees live on less than $2,000 a month.
