President Donald Trump has responded in characteristic fashion to the recent debate around AI safety<\/a> \u2014 by declaring that these concerns are part of a long line of hoaxes \u201cgenerated by the Radical Left Dumocrats, for purposes of destroying our Country.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Trump began his musings on AI by writing on his social network<\/a> Truth Social that \u201cmany people think that the words \u2018Artificial Intelligence\u2019 are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence.\u201d So he posted a poll where followers could vote on a new name for the technology \u2014 Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence, or Supreme Intelligence.\u00a0 (The poll is still ongoing as of publication time)\u00a0<\/p>\n

A couple hours later, Trump followed up with a post claiming<\/a> that attempts at \u201cthe decimation, or destruction, of AI\u201d are one of \u201cmany\u201d Democratic hoaxes, similar to \u201cRUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, Global Warming, Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, Men in Women\u2019s Sports, [and] Transgender for Everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump then insisted that he \u201cwill not stand by and let this happen,\u201d adding that this so-called hoax \u201cbegan with an attack on our Data Centers, until people realized how wealthy and prestigious they were for the Communities in which they were built.\u201d But after, in his telling, \u201cthe crazed Data Center attack has largely failed,\u201d critics are \u201cgoing straight at AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump did not offer any evidence to back up his claim that widespread suspicion of AI and data centers<\/a> is not organic and sincere<\/a>. (Both Republicans and Democrats have taken aim at data centers, and New York recently became the first state to halt permits for large projects<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s post also echoes his comments at a golf tournament last weekend<\/a>, when he said he\u2019s open to \u201cguardrails,\u201d but also argued, \u201cI think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn\u2019t be bringing it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Trump went on to say that he will \u201ccherish [the AI industry,] help it, and watch over it, as it grows,\u201d but he\u2019s also forming an AI Force, similar to the Space Force that he established in his first term.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo that end, I will be announcing, in the near future, the AI \u2018Czar\u2019 \u2014 Only High I.Q. individuals need apply!\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The president did not say what the AI Force and AI czar\u2019s duties will entail. Venture capitalist Daivd Sacks stepped down as Trump\u2019s AI and crypto czar<\/a> earlier this year, moving on to co-chair the President\u2019s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.<\/p>\n

The AI safety debate recently intensified after an AI researcher said he was quitting Anthropic<\/a> over concerns that the leading AI companies \u201cearnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade\u201d and are \u201cgambling with our lives.\u201d Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei subsequently released a plan to \u201cpace the frontier,\u201d<\/a> which was seemingly endorsed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Critics of the AI industry have suggested that many of these concerns around the technology\u2019s supposed existential threat are a distraction from AI\u2019s more immediate harms<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, meanwhile, called Trump on-stage during the All-In Summit<\/a> (which Sacks co-hosts), agreed with the president that the AI backlash is a \u201choax,\u201d and insisted that \u201cwe\u2019re not going to let\u201d a slowdown happen.<\/p>\n
