PA Health Department prepares to withdraw request for CDC aid amid rise measles cases<\/p>\n

In a letter, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra L. Bogen has called on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to publicly recognize four measles-associated deaths as part of the state\u2019s response to an ongoing outbreak. <\/p>\n

The letter addressed Dr. Erica Schwartz, director of the CDC and administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. She said the state\u2019s response has focused on community and healthcare provider outreach, sharing factual and scientific information, and expanding access to the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine. <\/p>\n

The letter explains that the Department of Health has administered more than 4,400 MMR doses at 140 pop-up clinics in affected communities and over 6,800 doses statewide in 2026. In August 2026, nearly 47,000 MMR vaccinations were reported to Pennsylvania\u2019s immunization registry, setting a record. The health department leader says vaccination activities have taken place in churches, fire halls, homes, and at community events and auctions, with additional clinics planned. <\/p>\n

Bogen said Pennsylvania has worked closely with CDC professionals throughout the outbreak, holding regular meetings to discuss resources, guidance and outbreak-related issues. The state recently submitted two technical-assistance requests and expressed appreciation for the CDC\u2019s responses. <\/p>\n

However, Bogen said despite these efforts Pennsylvania continues to report measles cases, hospitalizations and deaths. The state has now requested assistance through the CDC\u2019s Epidemic Intelligence Service\/Epi-Aid program. <\/p>\n

Bogen would go on raise concerns of the CDC\u2019s lack of public acknowledgment of four measles-associated deaths identified and reported by Pennsylvania. The state said its findings are based on sound epidemiological investigations and published guidance. She says on Sept. 10, 2026, Pennsylvania shared its definition of a measles-associated death with the CDC and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, and the CDC has not raised questions or concerns about the definition. <\/p>\n

The letter to the CDC director emphasized that federal-state cooperation must be respectful, transparent and fact-based. State officials requested assurances that federal assistance will support its public health staff and communications. Specifically, the state has asked the CDC to acknowledge the four deaths, report them transparently on its public dashboard, and communicate accurate and timely information about the outbreak. <\/p>\n
