{"id":854877,"date":"2026-09-21T00:54:52","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T00:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/854877\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T00:54:52","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T00:54:52","slug":"monaco-makes-davis-cup-history-with-3-1-win-over-finland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/854877\/","title":{"rendered":"Monaco Makes Davis Cup History With 3-1\u00a0Win Over Finland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monaco has made tennis history.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, September 19, the Principality secured a place in the Davis Cup Qualifiers with a 3-1\u00a0away victory over Finland, an unprecedented achievement for Monegasque tennis.<\/p>\n<p>The tie had gotten off to a difficult start on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas Catarina, who briefly came out of retirement for the occasion, suffered a heavy 6-0, 6-3\u00a0defeat to world No. 108\u00a0Otto Virtanen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">But Valentin Vacherot quickly brought Monaco level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">The world No. 21\u00a0defeated world No. 446\u00a0Eero Vasa 6-3, 7-6\u00a0to leave the tie finely poised heading into Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>    Monaco Holds Its Nerve<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">The pressure was on Romain Arneodo and Hugo Nys in the doubles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">A win would put Monaco ahead and leave the team one victory away from qualification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">The Monegasque pair lost the opening set 6-3\u00a0to Niklas-Salminen and Heli\u00f6vaara, the latter ranked world No. 1\u00a0in doubles.<\/p>\n<p>        <img id=\"article-thumbnail-11\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ARTVIEW-10725227-1200-800-3725b38_upload-1-znudyc66zuqa-maxmatinarchtwo090673.jpg\"   width=\"600\" height=\"400\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Captain Guillaume Couillard and his players are currently ranked 35th in the world.\" class=\"img-fluid position-absolute w-100 h-100 object-fit-cover rounded-2\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">But Arneodo and Nys kept their composure, taking the second set 6-4\u00a0before completing the comeback with a 6-3\u00a0victory in the third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">That left Vacherot with the chance to finish the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">He did so, although not without a fight, winning his singles match in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"fs-5 \">The victory gave Monaco an unassailable 3-1\u00a0lead and secured the Principality a historic place in the Davis Cup Qualifiers, among the competition\u2019s leading nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Monaco has made tennis history.
