(Balance Hydrologics)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Pictures of the molar show its strange shape, which Lynch initially thought was an oddly shaped rock.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The tooth is in &#8220;immaculate condition,&#8221; Wayne Thompson, CEO of Pacific Paleontology, told Fox News Digital in an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_travel_article_main-content_article-body_6_12058061\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/travel\/t-rex-footprints-unearthed-first-ever-discovery-66-million-years-creature-walked-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">T REX FOOTPRINTS UNEARTHED IN FIRST-EVER DISCOVERY 66 MILLION YEARS AFTER CREATURE WALKED THE EARTH<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Thompson, whose job it was to <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_travel_article_main-content_article-body_6_12058062\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/archaeology\/fossils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">examine the fossil<\/a> and assess the site where it was discovered, said the tooth likely dates back between 50,000 and 100,000 years, based on where it was found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t happen often. \u2026 [It&#8217;s] quite uncommon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;There is a lot of misinformation going around about the age of the tooth,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Most of the reports out [there] are saying it&#8217;s 10,000 years old, but it&#8217;s not 10,000 years.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;From the location where the specimen was found, we can pretty confidently say that it\u2019s much, much older than 11,700 years \u2014 probably on the order between 50,000 and 100,000 years,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_travel_article_main-content_article-body_6_12058063\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/travel\/ancient-ocean-mystery-deepens-long-misidentified-fossil-finally-revealed-researchers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ANCIENT OCEAN MYSTERY DEEPENS AS LONG-MISIDENTIFIED FOSSIL IS FINALLY REVEALED BY RESEARCHERS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Thompson said the condition of the tooth also offers clues about what happened to it after <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_travel_article_main-content_article-body_6_12058064\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/elephants-may-have-played-surprising-role-early-human-survival-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the mastodon died<\/a>, noting that it &#8220;hadn&#8217;t moved very much in the stream where the creature died.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;Mastodon teeth are \u2014 the roots are extremely fragile \u2014 and this one had the majority of the roots of the molar still preserved with it intact, and, so, it wasn&#8217;t tumbled around in the stream,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/CA-BAY-AREA-MASTODON-TOOTH-FOSSIL-ANCIENT-HISTORY-DISCOVERY-PALEONTOLOGY-ARCHAEOLOGY-3.jpg\" alt=\"Mastodon molar in creek\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>The ancient molar was found in a Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District preserve in San Mateo County, Calif.
