Without sufficient strength, simple daily tasks like getting out of bed, carrying shopping bags, and reaching for items in your pantry can become quite challenging.

In order to help you stay strong, capable, and independent as you age, we spoke with Dr. Sean T. Lordan PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, CEO of Concierge Physical Therapy. Below, Dr. Lordan shares five wall exercises that can help you get started building and maintaining muscle after 60.

“Wall exercises are useful because the wall gives us a stable external support. That can make strength training more approachable for someone who has balance limitations, hasn’t exercised in years, is recovering from an injury, or simply doesn’t feel comfortable using weights yet,” Dr. Lordan tells us.

Keep in mind that we’re not saying to ditch free weights altogether. These wall exercises can serve as a great starting point in your strength-building journey.

“If our goal is to combat age-related muscle loss, we need to give the muscle an adequate stimulus and then progressively increase that stimulus over time. Wall exercises absolutely can be part of that process, especially for beginners, but eventually many healthy adults will need greater resistance to continue getting stronger,” Dr. Lordan stresses.

Below are five wall exercises to consider adding to your routine.

Wall Sits

According to Dr. Lordan, wall sits are excellent for building strength and endurance in the glutes and quads, which is key for climbing stairs, getting up from a seated position, and staying independent.

Stand tall with your back pressed against a wall.
Slide down until your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle as if you’re sitting in a chair.
Hold the position for the prescribed amount of time.

If You Can Hold a Wall Sit This Long After 60, Your Leg Strength Is Top-Tier

Wall Pushups

6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

“Wall pushups are a safe, easily modified way to strengthen the chest, shoulders and triceps. As someone gets stronger, they can progressively move their feet farther from the wall or progress to a counter and eventually the floor,” Dr. Lordan points out.

Begin standing tall, arms-length away from a wall.
Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the surface.
Engage your core and bend your elbows to lower your chest toward the wall.
Press back up to the starting position, keeping the movement slow and controlled.

This 10-Minute Daily Routine Builds More Strength Than Hour-Long Gym Sessions After 55

Wall-Supported Squats

“I like these because the wall provides additional stability while we work on lower-body strength and proper squat mechanics,” Dr. Lordan explains.

Begin standing tall with your back pressed against a wall and your hands on your hips.
Activate your core.
Bend your knees and slide down the wall to lower into a squat.
Descend until your thighs are parallel to the ground.
Press through your feet to rise back up.

If You Can Pass These 4 Strength Tests After 45, Your Body Is Ahead of Its Time

Calf Raise

This exercise is simple yet important to work on as you age.

“Calf strength plays a major role in walking, stair climbing and balance. The wall allows someone to challenge the calves without making balance the limiting factor,” Dr. Lordan says.

Begin by standing tall with your feet hip-width apart.
Hold onto the wall for support.
Engage your core.
Rise onto your toes slowly, lifting for 1 second.
Lower back down for 3+ seconds.

The #1 Daily Workout To Build Shoulder Strength & Boost Mobility

Wall-Supported Marching

“This exercise combines hip strength with balance and stability, which becomes increasingly important as we age,” Dr. Lordan notes.

Begin standing tall, facing a wall with both hands resting lightly on the surface for support.
Shift your body weight onto your left leg, keeping your standing leg slightly bent.
Slowly lift your right knee up toward your chest, then lower it.
Repeat on the other side, and continue to “march” in place.

Alexa Mellardo

Alexa is a freelance writer, editor, and content strategist based in Greenwich, CT.
