Meanwhile, the yen continues to fluctuate after a historic joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/02\/business\/us-buys-japan-yen-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intervention<\/a> by Washington and Tokyo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubts2mu00013b6qb9slzfs0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The moves in Japan\u2019s bonds and currency have reverberations across the global economy. In Japan, the 10-year yield recently hit its highest level in 30 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000e3b6qvfafe2c4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rise in yields is a sign that economies across the world are entering an era of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/14\/investing\/bond-yields-market-turmoil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher interest rates<\/a> \u2014 and exiting the era of ultra-low interest rates that became a defining feature of the global economy after the 2008 financial crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000f3b6qp9wwk0mf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Bank of Japan \u2014 or BOJ \u2014 started raising interest rates in 2024, a major change after decades of ultra-low rates aimed at combating deflation. The BOJ hiked rates just last week in an effort to cool down inflation, its second increase this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000g3b6qhee2j6yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bond yields rise when prices fall. Bond prices have slumped in Japan, sending yields soaring, as investors adjust to persistent inflation and the BOJ raising rates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000h3b6qbizryb1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, markets are trying to assess Takaichi\u2019s budget plans. Investors are wary of her plans for tax cuts and increased government spending, which would swell borrowing needs when Japan already has an enormous debt load. In turn, they\u2019re demanding more compensation \u2013 or higher yields \u2013 to hold Japan\u2019s debt.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000i3b6qw3anon1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rise in Japan\u2019s yields matters for global markets because it can push up yields elsewhere, including the United States. It also shows how concerns about government spending can translate into higher borrowing costs as investors demand more compensation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtshli000j3b6qkzg5eykl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, higher yields in Japan can make buying Japan bonds more attractive for investors \u2013 who could pull money out of other markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtso0g000o3b6qwqbfszw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Currency markets are also in focus ahead of the expected Trump-Takaichi meeting Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000r3b6qmlvapt9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Treasury in late July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/02\/business\/us-buys-japan-yen-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intervened<\/a> in currency markets to boost the yen after the Japanese currency hit its lowest level against the dollar in 40 years. The move was a historic joint intervention with Japan. The yen hasn\u2019t re-touched those lows since then, but it has weakened closer to those lows in recent weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000s3b6q3im550ai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Analysts say the intervention was aimed in part at preventing Japan from selling assets, including US Treasuries, to support its own currency. Data released by the Treasury Department showed Japan reduced its holding of Treasuries in May, June and July. If Japan sells Treasuries, it can push prices lower and yields higher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000t3b6qzf06a255@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s put more attention on the trajectory of the yen. Bessent has notably taken interest in trying to manage how Japan\u2019s currency markets impact US markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000u3b6qbgm3wonb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are a multitude of factors that at a minimum could create quite a bit of volatility in the market and weigh on the US Treasury market,\u201d Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial, said. \u201cI think that\u2019s why you\u2019re seeing more and more conversation and commentary from the Treasury about how the Bank of Japan should handle their monetary policy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2285558786.jpg\" alt=\"The Japanese government's push for pension funds and individuals to invest more in domestic markets is seen as a potential boost for the nation's bonds and currency in the long term.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000v3b6qj413r3uj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traders are also on alert for just how strong the yen becomes. A strengthening yen while the BOJ is raising interest rates could unravel the so-called carry trade, where investors borrow cheap yen to invest in higher-yielding assets. If the yen rapidly strengthens while Japan\u2019s interest rates are already rising, it suddenly becomes more costly to borrow in yen and investors could be forced to sell their other assets \u2013 like stocks and US Treasuries \u2013 to close their trade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000w3b6q91i6f511@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the United States wants to avoid the yen weakening so much that Japan has to sell assets to boost its currency, it also doesn\u2019t want the yen to strengthen so fast that it draws investors away from other markets like the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmubtsuvr000x3b6qbt3hfh9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s a fine line to walk and highlights the sensitivity of US markets to what happens in Japan.
