\n\tUPDATED: TriStar Pictures\/Constantin Film\/Davis Films\u2019 Resident Evil<\/a> rang up a massive $108.3M worldwide, not only the best start the franchise has ever seen, but also Zach Cregger<\/a>\u2018s biggest start as filmmaker surpassing the $70M WW reported opening of last year\u2019s Weapons.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat was the previous biggest opener in the Resident Evil franchise? We\u2019re told it was 2012\u2019s Resident Evil: Retribution which bowed to $70.6M WW (note that included Russia and Japan in its first suite at the time). The movie finaled at $240M WW.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition, the opening alone for Resident Evil beats the global final of the original 2002 movie ($102.9M) as well as the last title, the failed reboot Welcome to Raccoon City ($41.9M). Currently, 2016\u2019s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter stands as the highest grossing title in the series with $312M (51% of that coming from China or $159.5M). <\/p>\n

\n\tAlso, get this but this zombie shoot-em up paced like Scream 7, in fact even better (that pic opened to a franchise best $63.5M and $97M worldwide. Comps to Scream 7 were iffy on Thursday night, until they became real. For a horror pic this year at the worldwide B.O., it\u2019s the second best after Backrooms\u2018 $118M. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn terms of pure international debuts for a horror movie YTD, Resident Evil\u2018s $48.3M is the best for the genre, higher than Backrooms\u2018 $36.6M. Resident Evil is 66% over Weapons, 33% above A Quiet Place: Day One, and 18% ahead of Alien: Romulus on a like-for-like basis at current exchange rates.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat\u2019s impressive is that the movie expanded its audience beyond the Milla Jovovich movies. UK at $5.8M was the top territory (in reported, 2010\u2019s 3D charged Afterlife bowed to $2.5M there). Mexico followed at $5.6M (higher than Afterlife\u2018s reported $3.2M). <\/p>\n

\n\tMetropolitan had French speaking markets, while Constantin had Germany speaking markets. France did $2.6M (higher than Final Chapter\u2018s reported $1M start). Germany counted $2.5M (higher than Final Chapter\u2018s reported $1.3M), <\/p>\n

\n\tOther top markets were Australia ($2.6M), Spain ($2.3M), Brazil ($2.0M), Italy ($1.7M), Saudi Arabia ($1.6M), UAE ($1.4M), Indonesia ($1.4M), Malaysia ($1.3M), Taiwan ($1.2M), the Philippines ($1.2M), and India ($1.1M). <\/p>\n

\n\tAnd there\u2019s 13% of foreign markets left to go, and they\u2019re big territories for the franchise, i.e. Thailand (Sept. 24), Japan (Oct. 9) and China (still to be dated). South Africa is opening on Sept. 23 while Central Asia is Sept. 24. <\/p>\n

\n\tFinal Chapter\u2018s $159.5M in the Middle Kingdom is looked at as an anomaly: Just a perfect place in time and space for a Resident Evil in regards to the types of U.S. action movies that fared well in China, in addition to the game\u2019s popularity. Japan was the second highest territory for Final Chapter at $36.4M. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition, A24\u2019s highest grossing movie ever, Backrooms, clicked past the $400M mark at the global box office.<\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal\u2019s The Odyssey was second around the globe in its tenth frame with $21.3M WW in 85 territories ($4.95M domestic, $16.4M int\u2019l) for a worldwide running total of $1.72B (Universal\u2019s highest as we told you with $1.11B offshore, $609.8M domestic). Korea added $3.1M in first place for a $91.6M tally, sailing past Avengers: Endgame\u2018s lifetime total and becoming the third biggest Hollywood movie of all-time in the territory behind Avatar 1 and 2. China\u2019s sixth frame was $2M and a $107.7M running cume, yes, still Christopher Nolan\u2019s second-highest grossing there behind Interstellar. Japan added $1.8M in Wknd 2, reaching $7.9M cume, performing well above Oppenheimer at the same point, as well as The Dark Knight Rises. The Odyssey clicked past Dune: Part Two\u2018s lifetime total earlier this week. Germany grossed $1.2M in its tenth frame for a $64M cume. <\/p>\n

If so, then Warner Bros\u2019 Practical Magic 2 ranked third on the global charts with $19.1M WW ($12.1M domestic, $7M offshore), $76.8M WW ($50M domestic, $26.8M foreign) for the net $75M production. Top five territory totals are UK ($7.5M), Australia ($3.6M), Mexico ($2.4M), Germany ($1.3M) and Spain ($1.2M). The first 1998 movie finaled at $94.4M WW. <\/p>\n

\n\tFourth is the eighth session of Sony<\/a>\/Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $17.2M WW ($10.8M offshore, $6.4M domestic) and a running global cume of $2.478B ($944.4M all-time running stateside cume, $1.53B offshore). Pic is in play on 17,500 screens in 67 markets. <\/p>\n

\n\tStand-up and applaud Ketchup Entertainment\u2019s rescue of Warner Bros Animation\u2019s Coyote Vs. Acme as the movie is on the edge, on the edge of cracking $100M WW with $54.7M in U.S.\/Canada and $44.3M abroad in 46 territories. That adds up to $99M after a global fourth frame of $10.5M ($4.4M domestic, $6.1M abroad) in the No. 5 worldwide spot. Warner Bros wrote off for $30M on the $70M project which Ketchup acquired global on for $50M (and then sold off foreign on). <\/p>\n

\n\tOther notables:<\/p>\n

\n\tAngel Studio\u2019s action movie Runner starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson minted $4.466M from 31 territories worldwide, of that $1.28M was from offshore and $3.1M domestic. Running global is $15.2M (with $11.9M from domestic). <\/p>\n

\n\tChina\u2019s Once Upon a Time in the Middle East from Muye Wen continued to lead the box office in China with a $4.3M weekend ahead of local film V and The Odyssey. Guess how much Middle East has made to date there? $323.8M. <\/p>\n

\n\tFocus Features\u2019 Obsession minted $2M from offshore this weekend with a current global running cume of $516.7M. That was largely driven by Korea\u2019s third weekend was $1.4M, ranking third behind The Odyssey and local remake The Intern for a $5.6M cume, surpassing the lifetimes of It, Annabelle, Insidious, Five Nights at Freddy\u2019s and A Quiet Place: Day One, in addition to having already overtaken a number of tentpole horrors earlier in the run. <\/p>\n

\n\tUniversal\/DreamWorks Animation\u2019s Forgotten Island started its offshore rollout and know that it\u2019s staggered. The Joel Crawford and Januel P. Mercado directed movie doesn\u2019t hit our shores until Sept. 25. For now, it\u2019s made $1.5M from Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Mexico posted $900K for a No. 3 rank which includes $400K of previews from last weekend and Wednesday\u2019s Independence Day public holiday. Audience reactions and sentiment are positive with crowds attracted to the pic\u2019s beauty and emotion. Australia bowed to $500K, No. 7 in the territory on 285 screens. Business on Saturday and Sunday was impacted by warm and dry weather and football semi-finals for both the AFL (football) and NRL (rugby). Very good audience and critics reactions are teeing the pic up for a solid run during the upcoming school holidays, which began today across 50% of the country.
