But in Takuya Tsutsumi\u2019s private studio, it becomes the raw material for art and furniture, and, perhaps, a reason to care about the animals behind it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82bhff00033b6rwipvl9po@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bears have become one of Japan\u2019s most contentious and feared wild animals. Causing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-10\/japan-bear-encounters-increase\/106772880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">13 deaths and more than 220 injuries<\/a> between April 2025 and March 2026, the wild animal has been defined as \u201ca serious threat to public safety and peace\u201d by the Japanese government, has forced the reallocation of local resources in a time of difficult economic recovery, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/operations-of-30-firms-in-north-eastern-japan-disrupted-by-bears-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disrupted<\/a> businesses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82bhff00043b6r2ddjlzt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The timber industry has felt the impact more than most. This is due to kumahagi or \u201cbear stripping.\u201d After waking from hibernation, bears strip the bark of trees, looking for the running sap and nutrients beneath it. If the tree survives, the wood grows irregularly around the exposed trunk, creating an uneven grain that sawmills struggle to cut into straight, standardized lumber.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82ch2800083b6r86qin70p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a result, the wood often falls outside the specifications required for its original purpose, said Japanese traditional lacquerer Tsutsumi. He is the fourth-generation owner of Kyoto-based Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Inc., a family-run manufacturer focusing on the 10,000-year-old art of using natural resin, or urushi, to add a glossy finish to pieces.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mari-yoshida9.jpg\" alt=\"A kumahagi-damaged tree.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4032\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mari-yoshida7.jpg\" alt=\"A kumahagi-damaged tree being processed before it is cut into wood for a surfboard.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4032\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82chjr00093b6rpltam9rf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He has watched the bear problem escalate, driven by a surge in bear numbers, reducing human presence in the forests which causes bears to lose their fear of people, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/09\/asia\/bear-attacks-japan-record-climate-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate change<\/a>, which is is interfering with the growth of some foods that make up bears\u2019 natural diet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82chjr000a3b6r71rcwoy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA standard Japanese cedar tree will lose a minimum of 25% of its value if damaged by bears,\u201d Tsutsumi told CNN. \u201cBut even when these parts are sawn, some more internal damage, distortion, or discoloration might be discovered later on, leaving the manufacturer with half of what they paid for, sometimes even less. In many cases, these damaged trees are reduced to wood chips for paper or fuel.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82chjr000b3b6r3k6idupf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Tsutsumi, the damage goes further than the economic toll. \u201cBears tend to target large, healthy, high-quality trees that have been carefully grown for 60 to 80 years,\u201d he said. \u201cThe loss also becomes an emotional one, as people cared for these trees sometimes for generations.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/mari-yoshida10.jpg\" alt=\"The Bears Wood Project explores ways of creating a sustainable circular approach to repurpose damaged timber.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4032\" width=\"3024\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000e3b6r4ymskl6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The timber industry is already grappling with a shortage of workers, Tsutsumi said, which makes it especially vulnerable to the issue. He believes these pressures have helped fuel the backlash against bears and the push for cullin<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-12\/as-japan-population-shrinks-urban-bears-are-moving-in\/106903824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">g<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000f3b6r29lghbts@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen bears are featured on Japanese television or social media, the discussion is often negative, focusing on ideas such as \u2018danger\u2019 and \u2018culling,\u2019\u201d Tsutsumi said. \u201cAt our scale, we want to promote a different perspective: rather than thinking of whether bears should be killed, we ask how we can rebuild an environment in which people and bears coexist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000g3b6r69wvctv6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2022, Tsutsumi launched the \u201cBears Wood Project,\u201d an initiative that serves not just as art but as a conversation starter. The concept is simple: saving decades-old, damaged trees from the wood chipper and, with the glossy properties of urushi, transforming them into precious artifacts that invite people to appreciate the bear\u2019s touch.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000h3b6rvnm4td2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUrushi transforms the \u2018flaws\u2019 of kumahagi-damaged wood into something beautiful and valuable,\u201d he said. \u201cRather than hiding the uneven surface or distorted grain, applying layers of urushi brings out these unique characteristics. In fact, the more irregular the material is, the more the craftsmanship can bring out its individuality.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt9xm85r000k3b6ral3tgrbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This project, highlighting the aesthetic value of kumagahi, also underscores its positive impact on the forest\u2019s biodiversity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt9xm96m000m3b6rrsl02jbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDead and decaying trees are an important part of forest ecosystems, providing habitat and food for insects, fungi and other organisms, as well as contributing to the structure of the forest floor as they eventually fall and decompose,\u201d Liam Adcock, a researcher at the Picchio Wildlife Research Center in Japan, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmta6yjl700053b6rqbw42hmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is also the potential for damaged trees to develop hollows over time. Tree cavities are particularly valuable for some wildlife, and Japan has some very specialized species that rely on old trees and cavities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt9xm96n000n3b6rt77eol0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He mentioned the endangered Blakiston\u2019s fish owl, a species strongly associated with large mature trees with cavities for nesting, with only 150 specimens left in Japan.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/takuya-tsutsumi23-20260825042414831.JPG\" alt=\"A surfboard made by the Bears Wood Project, with urushi applied.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4000\" width=\"6000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000i3b6ruaihsdcc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Through Tsutsumi\u2019s surfboards, skateboards, bouldering holds \u2014 shaped grips for climbing walls \u2014 tattoo studio signs, chairs, and even home renovation materials, wood touched by bears has found new life \u2014 and a bit of hype along the way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000j3b6rz0s56u2s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company sells the finished pieces at its Kyoto shop and hosts workshops where participants can learn about Japanese Asiatic black bears and how conservation can start with a single piece of wood. Since the project launched, it has organized over a dozen such sessions, welcoming people of all ages to \u201cthink more deeply about the relationship between people and nature.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmt82cpnw000k3b6rgb0l1hxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c(With this project), we want people to experience the forest and the wood for themselves and think about how bears, people, forests, and our everyday lives are all connected,\u201d Tsutsumi said.
