And I think that’s going to the top of the game. I want to be in the Top 5. I want to continue to push, try to be the number one American. I want those things — and being number one American is tough now.”

Tiafoe knows the competition well. Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, Learner Tien and Alex Michelsen are among the Americans battling alongside him near the top of the sport.

He also knows that while he’s been close, with three US Open semifinals and a pair of Masters finals to his name, there are still opportunities he feels he has left on the table.

“We got a lot of great Americans,” he said. “Taylor, Ben, obviously Tommy and Learner, but right now it’s just: try to do the thing, man. Try to do the thing in the major, do the thing in the thousands. I’m excited.”

Tiafoe’s 2026 season has given him plenty of reason to believe that those goals are attainable.

He began the year ranked No. 34, arriving at the Australian Open well removed from the Top 10, a place he hadn’t occupied since 2023. Nine months later, he is back at his career-high ranking of No. 8 after a season that has featured 47 victories and another deep run at the US Open.

Tiafoe fell to Shelton in the semifinals, leaving him 0-3 in US Open semifinals for his career. But viewed against where he stood at the beginning of the year, the defeat hardly diminishes what has been a transformative season.

“Obviously you wish you could have did the thing and finished the job,” he said. “For me, I take it in a little differently, but at the same time, I’m happy. From where I was on January 1 to where I sit today, that’s a tremendous jump.

“So obviously super happy about it. I came back and I’m sitting at my career high.”

That jump didn’t happen by accident. In fact, it is the product of a 100 percent buy-in.

After falling outside the Top 30, Tiafoe shook up his team and committed himself to a dramatically different approach. He hired Mark Kovacs as his coach, brought Brian Kubik onto the team and embraced a demanding fitness and discipline program he calls the “Hard 75.”

For Tiafoe, who has always played with spontaneity and emotion, part of the idea was surrounding himself with people who would demand consistency from him whether he wanted to hear it or not.

“I wanted someone who had an entirely different personality than I did, to just kind of continue to hold me accountable, even if it was annoying,” he said. “And it definitely does [get annoying] at times, but I need it.”

The Hard 75 became a physical and mental reset for Tiafoe, and it left him feeling bullet proof in tough on court moments.

“You have to do a 45-minute workout outside, 45-minute workout inside, no cheat meals, no drinking, read 10 pages a day, drink a gallon of water, diet,” Tiafoe said. “You’re choosing discipline every single day. And then obviously that’s going to pay off because then it’s second nature.”

Kubik, a former standout at the University of North Carolina, was alongside him for much of it.

“He was waking up at 5 a.m. with me, setting pace on the runs, beating me in a lot of sprints, telling me like, ‘Yo, you can do this, bro. You got more in the tank. Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.’

“And he’s probably one of the biggest reasons why I’m where I’m at today. He was really in the trenches with me. I got a lot of love for that guy, man.”

Instead of merely telling himself he has worked hard enough to survive difficult moments, Tiafoe carries proof of hard yards with him to the court before every match.

“I’ve won a lot of tight matches this year because of that,” he said. “I was like, ‘This guy hasn’t done what I’ve done.’ I know that. There’s a difference between saying it and actually knowing it.

“I know he wasn’t up at 5 a.m. running, I know he wasn’t there throwing after all these sprints, just going through all the stuff. And that really helps me.”

Tiafoe says dropping outside the Top 30 helped him “reinvent the hunger again,” and even after returning to No. 8, he hasn’t allowed himself to forget what it felt like when his career appeared to be moving in the opposite direction.

“I didn’t forget that,” he said. “I’m sitting at 8, but I’m like, I know what 30 felt like. Like I know what being slept on felt like.”

Tiafoe has already spent much of his career proving how dangerous he can be when the lights are brightest. In 2026, he has been trying to build something different: the habits and discipline to make that level sustainable.

Now firmly inside the Top 10, Tiafoe has a chance to push even higher this fall and in 2027. Perhaps the best has yet to come for Big Foe.

Frances Tiafoe has climbed all the way back to the Top 10 and surpassed his career-high ranking this…

[72
99,428
post-858463","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
