A federal judge temporarily blocked<\/a> President Donald Trump’s order banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House.<\/p>\n

Judge Timothy Kelly, whom Trump nominated to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in 2017, blocked Trump’s ban in a ruling early Thursday morning and ordered the White House to restore access to the three news organizations. Kelly, who in 2018 ordered<\/a> then-CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials restored after the Trump administration revoked them, issued a 14-day restraining order. Such temporary restraining orders are issued before a court reviews a case more comprehensively.<\/p>\n

In the ruling, Kelly wrote that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are “likely to succeed” in demonstrating that the Trump administration had not given the outlets “adequate due process.”<\/p>\n

“The record lacks factual support for Defendants’ contention that the revocation of Plaintiffs’ hard passes will in fact protect national security or that national security will be endangered if the Court orders their passes reinstated while this litigation proceeds,” Kelly wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Trump announced in a Truth Social post that he was banning the three outlets, which promptly sued the administration.<\/p>\n

“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote<\/a>. “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”<\/p>\n

In response to the ban, news organizations boycotted<\/a> press pool coverage of the president.<\/p>\n

Speaking in her capacity as president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich criticized<\/a> Trump’s ban hours after he issued it.<\/p>\n

“The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference,” she stated<\/a>. “That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask.”<\/p>\n
