The ghosts of five supernovas haunt this extraordinary image<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was acquired at Ouka\u00efmeden Observatory<\/a> in Morocco<\/a> with approximately 200 hours of observations and shows a large patch of the sky, equivalent to the area<\/a> of one thousand full moons tiled together, in the constellation of Auriga<\/a> (the charioteer<\/a>).<\/p>\n

From left to right, the five supernova remnants visible across the field are G181.1+9.5<\/a>, G182.4+4.3<\/a>, G179.0+2.6<\/a>, G180.0\u22121.7<\/a> (Sh2-240, the Spaghetti Nebula<\/a>), and G178.2\u22124.2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They are highlighted in the annotated image<\/a>, together with open cluster<\/a> M37<\/a> and the Tadpole Nebula<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As each explosion expanded into space<\/a>, it created a growing shell of shocked gas and delicate filamentary structures shown in red (hydrogen<\/a>) and blue (oxygen<\/a>), respectively. <\/p>\n

These ancient stellar explosions happened independently; they are at various distances up to about several thousands of light-years<\/a> away from Earth and have estimated ages up to tens of thousands of years old<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Early humans<\/a> may have witnessed<\/a> them as bright new stars, fading over weeks or months.<\/p>\n
