They are typically found in tropical parts of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. But this month, two have come ashore in California.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhh00023b6rnu78weai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An olive ridley turtle was seen digging a nest near Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Orange County last week, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhh00033b6rtgmlk8r9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A few days later, a nesting olive ridley was spied near the Huntington Beach Pier, also in Orange County. Originally, it was believed they were the same turtle, but an expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NOAAFisheriesWestCoast\/posts\/we-can-now-confirm-that-the-two-olive-ridley-sea-turtles-observed-nesting-on-ora\/1529622049211115\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analysis<\/a> of body shapes and unique shell patterns confirmed these were two different turtles.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/809615763-1090131353509341-7592500117010547244-n.jpeg\" alt=\"The nesting olive ridley sea turtle near the Huntington Beach Pier, California.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2100\" width=\"1400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhh00043b6r0bjw1oi6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sightings mark \u201cthe first-ever documented natural sea turtle nesting on the US West Coast,\u201d the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid02BSD4FrKwhCz5HYexg7EY835rJMDdAbAmkGc5Nz8en2N8U81cca2k4gwHWJGYRNvfl&amp;id=100064900023662&amp;mibextid=wwXIfr&amp;_rdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> in a social media post.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhi00063b6rdts009sl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Olive ridley turtles are known for mass nesting, called \u201carribada,\u201d where thousands come ashore at the same time to lay their eggs on a certain beach \u2014 a phenomenon that\u2019s been observed in countries such as Costa Rica and Mexico. But it\u2019s more common for the turtles to nest in a solitary way, which is what appears to have happened in California.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhi00073b6rc9rxky1n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists are still working to understand what pushed the turtles northward and whether this is an anomaly or potentially a more long-term expansion of their range as the human-driven climate crisis warms the oceans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufpsvxv002u3b6rt3j9k8x6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Their behavior was very likely influenced by the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/14\/weather\/super-el-nino-forecast-strength-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">super El Ni\u00f1o weather pattern<\/a>, which has driven up ocean temperatures, said Jeffrey Seminoff, leader of the Marine Turtle Ecology &amp; Assessment Program at NOAA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufr9fzz00083b6rll2trziv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But this is likely not the only reason. The Pacific Ocean has been particularly busy recently as the exceptionally warm water brought by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/23\/weather\/el-nino-hurricane-polo-hawaii-storm-nolo-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">El Ni\u00f1o supercharges its hurricane season<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufrhkjp001i3b6r7f69se38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNothing is off the table in terms of causation. It will be so hard to unravel the specific reasons,\u201d Seminoff said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhi000b3b6r3tgzp1o6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Each olive ridley nest usually contains around 100 eggs, and the sex of the baby turtles is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/08\/03\/us\/florida-turtles-born-female-climate-change\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affected by temperature<\/a>. Warmer temperatures tend to produce more female turtles. For olive ridleys, temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savetheseaturtle.org\/FoundationNews\/WarmingOliveRidley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around 87 degrees Fahrenheit<\/a> and above will mean almost all hatchlings will be female.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufj8rhi000a3b6rnbdhfwwv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An interagency team will monitor the California nests for the next 45-60 days, the typical incubation period. The nest sites have already been fenced off and people are being asked to give them space and avoid disturbing them, to give the baby turtles the best chance of hatching.
