For more than 30 years, astronomers have been searching for a particular kind of black hole. They knew it should exist somewhere in our galaxy, but they just couldn’t find one. Now, they’ve finally discovered a good candidate, and it was hiding in plain sight.

The system, called IRAS 18293−0941, may be the Milky Way’s first confirmed microblazar: a miniature version of the extraordinary cosmic powerhouses found at the centres of distant galaxies.

IRAS 18293−0941 consists of a black hole stealing material from a massive companion star and launching two powerful jets into space. One points almost directly towards Earth, carrying matter at roughly 0.75x the speed of light. The other shoots in the opposite direction, where it appears to slam into an enormous cloud of interstellar gas.

In addition to being cosmically spectacular, the discovery could help explain another astronomical mystery: where some of the most energetic particles in our galaxy come from.

A black hole hiding in plain sight

The object was first detected in 1983 by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), but it attracted relatively little attention for decades.

It was difficult to study because thick clouds of interstellar dust obscure much of its visible light. Yet radio observations later revealed a bright central source with a narrow, elongated structure extending from only one side.

The fact that it appeared to extend from only one side was an important clue.

Black holes can launch two opposing jets as they pull material from their surroundings. When one jet travels towards an observer at nearly the speed of light, an effect called relativistic beaming makes its emission appear much brighter than that of the jet moving away. This can create the illusion of a black hole firing only one jet, even though it produces two.

×

                        Thank you! One more thing…

Please check your inbox and confirm your subscription.

The researchers suspected that IRAS 18293−0941 might be just such a system. But they needed to establish that the radio emission actually came from the suspected stellar binary.

Peeling the black veil

An international team led by Josep Martí of the University of Jaén in Spain launched an extensive observing campaign.

Using the European VLBI Network, a collection of radio telescopes that can work together as an enormous virtual telescope, the researchers obtained exceptionally sharp images of the system. They then compared the radio source’s position with measurements from the European Space Agency’s Gaia spacecraft.

The positions matched, confirming that the jet belonged to the stellar system.

The observations gave the researchers the confirmation they had been looking for. The radio jet and the star occupied the same position in the sky, ruling out the possibility that the apparent jet belonged to an unrelated galaxy in the background.

“This was the moment the result became solid,” says Benito Marcote from the Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC, JIVE, in The Netherlands.

“A one-sided radio jet on its own could always be from a distant galaxy that happens to lie in the same direction of the star we were studying. The resolution achieved by the EVN position together with the known position of the star from the Gaia satellite confirmed it: the jet belongs to the stellar system,” the astronomer concluded.

Meanwhile, optical observations revealed that the two objects orbit each other approximately every 11.38 days. The small variations in the system’s brightness suggest that we’re looking at the binary almost face-on, with its orbital plane tilted relatively little from our perspective.

In other words, the jet is pointing straight at Earth (though at a distance of 12,000 light-years, it poses no newly identified danger to our planet).

A miniature version of a cosmic monster

Astronomers have long known about blazars, some of the brightest and most energetic objects in the universe.

A blazar is an extremely bright and active galactic nucleus powered by a supermassive black hole with a particle jet pointed directly at the observer (in this case, the Earth). Relativistic beaming amplifies the radiation we receive, making the objects appear extraordinarily bright.

A microblazar operates on the same basic principle, except that — you’ve guessed it — it’s smaller. Its central engine is a stellar-mass black hole rather than one containing millions or billions of solar masses.

In IRAS 18293−0941, the black hole is thought to have a mass of roughly ten Suns. It draws material from its massive companion, forming a swirling disk of hot gas. Some of that material falls towards the black hole. Powerful magnetic fields associated with the accretion flow can also help launch matter into two oppositely directed jets.

The result is a scaled-down version of a distant blazar, close enough for astronomers to study its structure and evolution in considerably greater detail.

The system is useful because it lets astronomers do some very cool science.

A natural particle accelerator

Illustration: ZME Science (AI generated).

Finding this black hole is exciting enough. But astronomers may have also found a way to watch it accelerate particles to extraordinary energies — and to study how those particles reshape the surrounding galaxy.

The key lies in the black hole’s other jet, the one pointing away from Earth.

Using South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope, researchers discovered that this otherwise invisible jet appears to have carved out an enormous bubble in the surrounding gas. The “bubble” stretches roughly 100 light-years from the black hole. At its far end, the jet seems to slam into a dense cloud of gas and dust, creating a bright region where energy is released.

This collision could help solve a longstanding astronomical mystery: where do some of the Milky Way’s most energetic particles come from?

Space is filled with fast-moving charged particles called cosmic rays. Some carry millions of times more energy than particles produced in the world’s most powerful accelerators. Scientists know that violent cosmic events can accelerate them, but identifying their precise origins is difficult.

Black hole jets are promising candidates. When a jet crashes into a cloud of gas, it creates powerful shock waves and turbulent magnetic fields that can accelerate charged particles to enormous speeds.

Astronomers can investigate several parts of this process in the same system: the black hole launching the jet, the enormous bubble it has carved into space, and the suspected collision site where particles gain energy. By combining observations from different telescopes, they can test how the jet transfers energy into its surroundings and whether it really produces the gamma rays detected nearby.

A nearby laboratory for extreme physics

The new study, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, opens up new opportunities to investigate how black holes affect their surroundings.

The team plans further observations of the jet and its suspected collision site, hoping to better understand how energy is transferred into interstellar gas and how particles are accelerated. Because IRAS 18293−0941 lies within our own galaxy, astronomers can examine these processes much easier than around the supermassive black holes powering distant blazars.

Basically, this gives astronomers a front-row seat to one of the universe’s most extreme natural experiments — and perhaps a new clue to where some of the Milky Way’s most energetic particles originate.

Journal Reference: Martí et al.
