If technology companies could harness the power of the sun, then a central resource challenge could be solved. Renewable sources such as wind and solar accounted for about 24%, nuclear power roughly 20%, and coal around 15%.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Data centers in space, however improbable sounding, present an attractive alternative to tech leaders. Placing solar panels in space taps into the virtually limitless power of the sun \u2014 without an atmosphere blocking sunlight or a day-night cycle.\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">While the technology is obviously untested right now, the contest to establish a network of satellites that work in concert as a data center is an extension of the rivalry currently playing out among tech giants and frontier labs. A rivalry where Google might gain the upper hand, if this test works, the satellites survive the shocks up to 100 g, and their space-specific cooling systems that don&#8217;t use air or water, as on Earth, work as intended.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Google has not disclosed how much it is spending on Project Suncatcher.
