{"id":860399,"date":"2026-09-25T17:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T17:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/860399\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T17:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T17:22:11","slug":"smartphone-use-at-age-12-linked-to-eating-disorder-symptoms-by-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/860399\/","title":{"rendered":"Smartphone use at age 12 linked to eating disorder symptoms by 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmue9d5hb001z27qrh6tq8d4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kids who have their own smartphones at age 12 are more likely to develop eating disorder symptoms than their peers without the devices, according to a new study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00033b6qooe3gqmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The research, published Friday in the medical journal <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamanetworkopen.2026.37897?guestAccessKey=ecf16698-f8aa-4d91-b65d-a0a4d190f6cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JAMA Network Open<\/a>, comes from a wide-ranging survey of nearly 9,000 adolescents across the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00043b6qmnrxd79d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA smartphone can put a world of appearance-focused content in a young person\u2019s pocket,\u201d exposing them to images and messages that may foster unhealthy eating behaviors, said Dr. Jason Nagata, the study\u2019s lead author. \u201cIt\u2019s important for parents to be aware that getting a smartphone isn\u2019t just about the device. It can change a child\u2019s access to different content and exposures in the digital world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00053b6qy3jdn1v5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It may matter not just whether you get your kid a phone, he said, but when you do it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00073b6qsx9s03yg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spending time on screens and social media is associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pcd\/issues\/2025\/24_0537.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a range of negative outcomes for kids<\/a>, including depression, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/21\/health\/smartphones-not-safe-preteens-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower feelings of self-worth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/12\/health\/adolescent-social-media-substance-use-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experimenting with drugs and alcohol<\/a>. Past research by Nagata\u2019s lab has found correlations between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/03\/04\/us\/screen-time-binge-eating-preteen-wellness-trnd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">screen time and binge eating<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00083b6qkh7xovdr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most earlier studies have looked at how much time young people spend on their devices, said Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. For the new paper, he wanted to focus on the age at which children start using them and how doing so might affect the development of disordered eating down the road.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn00093b6q2xgkx373@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around 22% of children and adolescents worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/20\/health\/disordered-eating-kids-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">show signs of disordered eating<\/a>, according to research estimates. The distinction between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaleatingdisorders.org\/what-is-the-difference-between-disordered-eating-and-eating-disorders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disordered eating and an eating disorder<\/a> essentially comes down to the level of severity and whether or not a person meets the criteria for a diagnosis. Both may include a fixation on food and weight, distorted feelings about body shape and size, restricted eating, or compensating for calorie intake by throwing up or exercising.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fhn000a3b6q3x5wlb2x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Using data collected from the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcdstudy.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study<\/a>, a large, long-term study of brain development and health in American children, Nagata and his team found that 70% of 12-year-olds owned their own phone. Of those, 24% reported at least one eating disorder symptom at age 14. By comparison, less than 16% of teens who did not have a smartphone at age 12 reported disordered eating two years later.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000c3b6qk1hm29nc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The tween years are a crucial time in development, both physically and emotionally. Puberty comes with major changes in body and body image, and it\u2019s natural, Nagata said, for kids to compare themselves with one another.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000d3b6qffmwz25i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before smartphones and social media, those comparisons happened mainly among peers. \u201cBut when you\u2019re comparing yourself to influencers whose images are curated, edited and filtered,\u201d he said, \u201cthat can lead to more body dissatisfaction and poor self-esteem, and then that can be a risk factor for eating disorders.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-1559979129.jpg\" alt=\"Experts recommend parents establish ground rules about phone use when entrusting preteens with the devices.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000e3b6qlsbm65qo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kids who had smartphones at 12 were twice as likely to tie their self-worth to their weight and 1 \u00bd times more likely to have tried controlling their weight by, for instance, eating low-calorie foods or exercising a lot, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000f3b6qw67eopdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Holding off on smartphones might spare adolescents from body image issues \u2014 at least for a while, said Dr. Mitch Prinstein, the John Van Seters Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and codirector of the Winston Center on Technology and Brain Development. Prinstein, who was not involved in the current study, said new research is beginning to find that delaying access to phones and other devices by six months or a year seems to benefit kids\u2019 mental health.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000g3b6qia86jgm0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When kids do get their own phones, he recommends parents let them \u201cslowly, gradually get more exposure to social media over time. We don\u2019t want to give them a completely unlocked phone with all the opportunities to visit whatever they want for as long as they want.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000h3b6qzy62krnj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most major social media platforms set 13 as the minimum age to create an account, Nagata said, yet his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academicpedsjnl.net\/article\/S1876-2859(25)00009-9\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">past research has found<\/a> that nearly two-thirds of 11- and 12-year-olds have accounts on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000i3b6q8ebx51ou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This latest study doesn\u2019t provide the \u201cmagic answer\u201d as to when the ideal time is to get your kids a smartphone, he said. But if parents do entrust preteens with their own phones, they may want to consider \u201cadditional guardrails,\u201d such as limiting the apps kids can download and keeping phones out of the bedroom, so it is easier to monitor their activity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmufz0fho000j3b6q1hpp6tlf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s so important for parents to stay involved with their children\u2019s digital lives,\u201d Nagata said.
