It is a bold bet on Starship, the vehicle Elon Musk has described as “a fork in the road of history.” However, Starship has yet to demonstrate a tower catch and reflight of its upper stage, while a rare Sell rating from DZ Bank shows that some investors remain skeptical about the timeline. The shift leaves investors with two very different narratives: the company’s ability to execute its own transition and the opportunity opening up for its closest medium-lift rival: Rocket Lab Corp (NASDAQ:RKLB<\/a>). <\/p>\n

While these two companies are fighting for the space economy, SpaceX’s merger into a friendly company is again being debated<\/a> in the market. <\/p>\n

DZ Bank started coverage with a Sell rating and a $100 price target. The firm pointed to SpaceX’s heavy capital spending, its $60 billion acquisition, and the expected increase in tradable shares as IPO lock-ups expire. Separately, other analysts have identified Starship’s unproven commercial status as a key execution risk. Starship has yet to demonstrate a tower catch and reflight of its upper stage, which presents a tougher challenge than the booster, while the company’s customers reportedly expect Falcon rideshares could require an extension if Starship slips. With Falcon 9 having completed 107 missions in 2026 through September 19, the decision appears to be a strategic bet rather than a response to capacity constraints, but it depends on an unproven timeline. <\/p>\n

What It Means For Rocket Lab? <\/p>\n

Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ:RKLB<\/a>) stands as the most direct beneficiary of the shift. Its Neutron rocket targets the medium-lift, reusable market that Falcon 9 currently dominates. The company’s second-quarter backlog reached $2.36 billion, increasing 137% year-over-year, and more than 90 launches are under contract. If satellite operators turn to alternative launch providers, Rocket Lab could absorb some of that demand through Electron in the short term and Neutron after its debut, although Rocket Lab has said the window for an end-of-2026 Neutron launch is narrowing. <\/p>\n

Amid all this, the stock is also going up on other news that helps RKLB with vertical integration to dominate space infrastructure<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, short interest has risen from 5.4% to 7.6% since the stock reached an all-time high of $151 in late May. <\/p>\n

SpaceX is making a high-conviction bet on Starship by winding down Falcon 9 rideshares, while Rocket Lab stands to benefit regardless of the outcome. What matters most now is the timing of the transition and how long the gap remains between Falcon’s exit and Starship’s readiness. <\/p>\n

SpaceX has 119 hedge funds among its institutional holders, highlighting broad institutional interest. As of August 31, 2026, short interest accounted for 2.76% of float, a modest level that points to limited bearish positioning even as investors question the timeline for the Falcon-to-Starship transition. <\/p>\n

Rocket Lab saw a notable increase in hedge fund ownership, with the number of funds holding the stock rising from 43 at the end of Q1 2026 to 52 at the end of Q2 2026. Short interest reached 7.6% of float as of August 31, 2026, compared with 5.4% since the stock’s all-time high in May. <\/p>\n

Both companies continue to be a solid bet on the improving space launch economics, benefiting from the early rush to get into space. How they evolve as the space economy grows remains to be seen, but Rocket Lab’s vertical integration certainly makes it a more likely multibagger from here on. <\/p>\n
