\u201cThe waves, the wave actions, the way it comes in, it just takes everything in its path,\u201d said Mike Jones, the emergency management director for Upper Township, New Jersey. \u201cAnd there\u2019s really no way to stop Mother Nature.\u201d <\/p>\n
A full moon Saturday night is also expected to lift tides up to 5 to 6 inches. <\/p>\n
One New Jersey resident said she closed up her whole house to prepare.<\/p>\n
Outside Washington, abnormally high tides were seen along the Potomac River, inundating roads with floodwaters. Oceans Calling, a popular three-day music festival in Ocean City, Maryland, over three days, was canceled.<\/p>\n
In North Carolina, winds greater than 50 mph have been recorded. A video showed a car in the state nearly swept into the ocean before a tow truck saved it. <\/p>\n
Nor\u2019easters are so called because the wind hitting the U.S. East Coast comes from the northeast. Cold air comes south from Canada and creates a storm when it meets warmer ocean water in the Atlantic, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says.<\/p>\n
They are most common and most violent between September and April, and they \u201cnearly always bring precipitation in the form of heavy rain or snow,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n
