Every morning, Derek Zhao jogs the perimeter of Treasure Island, his home, situated an eight-minute ferry ride from San Francisco. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0an endless source of\u00a0frustration for me that I\u00a0can\u2019t bring my cameras with me,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen the island gifts me its beautiful scenes, I\u00a0should be grateful that phones have pretty decent cameras, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zhao works as a\u00a0machine-learning engineer at Disney California. He relocated from Texas last year to take up the role, finding the 400-acre human-made island to be the perfect location, \u201cclose enough to the office and all the culture the city has to\u00a0offer, but far enough that I\u2019m\u00a0waking up to the sound of seagulls instead of car\u00a0horns\u201d.<\/p>\n
He took this image earlier this year, stopping mid-jog to capture the top of San Francisco\u2019s Salesforce Tower. \u201cI was mesmerised by how the fog, caused by what\u2019s known as a marine layer, completely covered the rest of the skyline, leaving only the tower looking like a monolith,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s ironic that something that obscures, like fog, can make a\u00a0scene more clear.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s only recently that Zhao has come to realise that his favourite photos don\u2019t come from travels with his professional cameras, but \u201cimprobable scenes near home that somehow only reveal themselves when I\u2019m\u00a0not expecting them.
