“[The aprons] were, as I understand it, put in place to even the playing field amongst teams that have an outsized financial advantage in comparison to the majority of the league… The aprons are intended to make it so a team’s primary team-building philosophy can’t be spending,” Presti said.

Thunder are clear long-term winners of CBA in Sam Presti’s eyes

Based on Sam Presti’s explanation of the rules, the OKC Thunder are massive beneficiaries of the new CBA, even though they were just forced to let go of a chunk of their 2024-25 championship roster.

Oklahoma City has never been a large market. It barely compares to cities like Los Angeles or New York, which can generate tons of revenue by agreeing to blockbuster TV deals and jacking up ticket prices.

The Thunder would find it just as hard to retain players like Dort, Wiggins, and Joe, and without any sort of financial regulation. Teams like the Lakers, Knicks, and Warriors, on the other hand, would have no trouble spending their way to the NBA Finals, just as they have for much of the 21st century.

According to Presti, the apron penalties don’t deter teams from building a championship roster. They encourage teams to do it the right way.

Apron penalties forcing teams to do what Thunder already excel at

The general manager is obviously fond of the CBA, not because it gives the Thunder an unfair advantage, but because it promotes a style of management that he already excels at. Since moving to Oklahoma City, the Thunder have made a living by capitalizing on draft picks and developing players internally.

Even in their championship year, most of their roster was homegrown, and superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had been a part of the roster since before he became a household name.

Two of the three veterans that the Thunder had to move on from this offseason began their careers in Bricktown.

In short, the organization has all but mastered the strategy that the apron penalties heavily promote. As a result, the Thunder are better positioned than most other franchises to weather the storm brought on by the financial restrictions.

After Thursday’s presser, it’s clear that Sam Presti is well aware of this fact.
