Racism plagues American health care \u2014 reverse racism.<\/p>\n
The Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division just brought another case against a top medical school for blatant discrimination against white and Asian applicants: Blacks applying to<\/a> the University of California at San Francisco\u2019s med school get admitted at almost 13 times the rate of similarly qualified white applicants.\u00a0<\/p>\n Black and Hispanic students the school admitted from 2023 to \u201925 averaged lower test scores and undergraduate grades than the average white and Asian applicant the school rejected.<\/p>\n Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon\u2019s letter blasting UCSF follows similar ones to UCLA, UCSD and Yale; virtually every other US med school is likely as bad, but she\u2019s building the evidence before she strikes.<\/p>\n The University of Pennsylvania offers a path for students at eight other colleges to enter medical school without taking the MCAT at all<\/a> \u2014 and five of the eight are historically black colleges.<\/p>\n At the University of Texas-Southwestern, per data from medical-accountability watchdog Do No Harm, \u201cblack applicants had 21 times the odds<\/a> of acceptance compared to white applicants with similar academic credentials,\u201d to choose another.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Sadly, this racism isn\u2019t remotely new: These admission disparities started back in the late 1960s.<\/p>\n What\u2019s gotten markedly worse is how the schools have eviscerated their standards<\/a> for graduation, as well as their curricula.<\/p>\n Richard Bosshardt, a surgeon and Do No Harm senior fellow<\/a>, notes that \u201cmany candidates for certification\u201d now take \u201cseven hours to complete an operation that should take at most four\u201d and cites \u201ca rise in patients\u2019 post-operative complications\u201d driven significantly by schools that fear \u201cto correct, hold back, or drop underperforming minority trainees.\u201d<\/p>\n Med schools have been reducing required classes in actual medicine and adding ones in \u201csocial justice.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n The rot is so deep that school leaders are defying the Supreme Court\u2019s landmark 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions, banning race discrimination in admission.<\/p>\n UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood re-upped the school\u2019s devotion to \u201canti-racism\u201d<\/a> the day the decision came down, while George Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School, said, \u201cWe will never cease in our quest to level the playing field<\/a>\u201d and Dennis Charney, dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, blathered about the school\u2019s<\/a> \u201cunwavering commitment to the core principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Advocates sometimes justify their racism by claiming black patients do better with black doctors, but that\u2019s a myth based on a debunked study<\/a>.<\/p>\n In fact, the discrimination is literally deadly: Less-qualified students make for less-good doctors; in the end, patients pay for the progressives\u2019 \u201cprincipled\u201d racism.<\/p>\n And medical schools focused on teaching not about anatomy or pharmacology, but structural racism and decolonization, turn out graduates less qualified than they could be.<\/p>\n
