The director\u2019s sequel to 2023\u2019s blockbuster \u201cGodzilla Minus One\u201d wowed journalists with epic thrills and the first R-rated action set pieces in the long-running kaiju franchise. First reactions out of the festival are calling \u201cGodzilla Minus One\u201d a \u201cjaw-dropping spectacle\u201d and a \u201cglorious continuation of the first film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA truly epic cinematic feat,\u201d writes reporter Jonathan Sim. \u201cIt takes the King of the Monsters to a whole new level while still grounding everything in human, emotional stakes. A must-see blockbuster that truly delivers. Unmatched VFX, action, and scale. Rousing, incredible filmmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTakashi Yamazaki\u2019s made a worthy successor to \u2018Minus One\u2019 with a family-centric story that\u2019s also filled with thrilling action sequences and jaw-dropping monster battles,\u201d adds Marissa Hill. \u201cBut it works in the quieter moments too\u2026 It\u2019s still astonishing to me that these films, made on a fraction of the budget as current day blockbusters, look this good\u2026 the King of Monsters has never looked or sounded this grand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFilm critic Edward Douglas was \u201ccompletely blown away\u201d by the sequel, while fellow critic Brandon Lewis called the movie an \u201coverwhelming achievement of kaiju filmmaking. Aside from the jaw-dropping spectacle, Takashi Yamazaki packs in an emotional wallop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d is the 38th film in the \u201cGodzilla\u201d franchise and the 34th produced by Toho, the Japanese entertainment company that originally created the franchise. Yamazaki returns to the director\u2019s chair after the immense success of \u201cGodzilla Minus One,\u201d which earned $116 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese \u201cGodzilla\u201d film of all time. \u201cMinus One\u201d also won the Oscar for best visual effects. The sequel stars Kamiki Ryunosuke and Hamabe Minami and marks the first time a Japanese feature has been shot for Imax screens.<\/p>\n

\n\tPer the official description, \u201cGodzilla Minus Zero\u201d picks up in 1949, \u201ctwo years after the tumultuous events of \u2018Godzilla Minus One,\u2019 and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.\u201d The rampage-causing Godzilla is bigger than ever this time and heads to New York City for a global action epic. <\/p>\n
