Prepare to be jealous: These boaters got to add bear cub rescuer to their resumés. CBC British Columbia recently reported on the story of a little guy who was in luck when a family spotted him barely able to keep his head above water. “While boating on Okanagan Lake last weekend, a B.C. family spotted a bear cub struggling to keep its head above water and pulled it onto their boat. The impromptu rescue was captured on video,” the caption explains.

In the clip, we get to see a very tiny Black Bear swimming and clearly struggling to keep it up. The rescuer thought he was a dog at first because he was so small. After the group pulled him out of the water, they took him to shore on the advice of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. At the end of the clip, he lopes off and heads toward the trees.

In general, bears are excellent swimmers, but perhaps this little guy took a cold plunge he wasn’t quite ready for. Hopefully, he finds mama and learns to stick to shallow water until he gets a bit bigger.

What To Do If You Spot a Bear Cub in Distress

This video points out the obvious, and we’ll echo it here: When there’s a baby bear, there’s probably a mom not far behind. The phrase mama bear exists for a reason, and the last thing you want is to get between a mom and her cub. Wildlife experts recommend never approaching or handling cubs (capturing them is illegal in many places). Usually, if you stumble upon a baby, you should exit the area quickly and safely.

However, as in this case, sometimes you’ll find a wild animal who truly needs human help. The first step is to call a local organization to advise you, as they’ll know what kinds of bears live in the area and whether to step in. Sometimes babies get separated from Mom while she’s foraging but don’t need any assistance. An expert will come out and determine if a bear has been orphaned or injured, in which case it may go to a wildlife center. Luckily, this little guy didn’t need anything else.
