It’s built around Wear OS, the same operating system found on Pixel Watch but with more bells and whistles thanks to extra sensors for a healthier lifestyle. Specifically, the latest Galaxy Watches can measure body composition, circulation health, and even antioxidant levels. These settings and sensors are great, but they can also intimidate newcomers to the smartwatch space or those used to other brands that don’t go that deep.

Five Galaxy Watch settings are worth changing right away on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Ultra lines. Personally, I own a Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and a Google Pixel Watch 3, so I know a thing or two about taming smartwatches and making them work for personal use cases in and out of the gym. The steps we’re featuring here are based on using a Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 or Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra and up, but should apply to any Galaxy Watch, though some steps may differ on older models. So where do users start with this digital minefield?

                Watch face optimization

                    javi_indy/Shutterstock

There are thousands of watch faces to choose from, and users can also use their own photos as backgrounds. Long-press the watch face to open the face gallery and switch watch faces, then long-press the active face and tap the gear-and-pencil icon, then choose a custom image or a photo from the attached phone’s photo gallery.

A cool watch face is the Daily Dashboard face. It slowly changes its background color throughout the day and supports up to eight Complications. Select the Daily Dashboard face first, long-press to edit it, tap into each Complication slot and assign a feature from the list. Complications aren’t limited to this list either, and more will automatically appear as a user installs supported apps.

Watch faces and face settings can drain battery life. More active watch faces, along with AOD (always-on display) and auto-brightness, can drain a Galaxy Watch battery. Turning off AOD and adaptive brightness is a great way to save battery life; you can do this by deactivating the watch face outline icon in the quick menu (swipe down from the top of the Galaxy Watch). If the icon is grey or dark, that means it’s turned off. For auto brightness, tap the settings icon, then go to display, and toggle off adaptive brightness. Then set the brightness level between 25% and 40%. Turning on “raise-to-wake” also keeps the watch face off until a user raises their wrist.

                Gestures and the hardware buttons

                    Iiievgeniy/Getty Images

The double-pinch gesture, performed with your thumb and index finger, answers calls, dismisses alarms, captures photos and more. It’s a really “handy” feature to activate (not sorry). To set it up, go to the gesture list under Settings, then Buttons and gestures, then just pinch the thumb and index finger together twice near the watch. Similarly, you can activate the wrist-shake gesture to reject a call, dismiss alerts, and return the Galaxy Watch to the watch face. There’s also a knock gesture to open an app, but I’ve not found it to be very reliable.

A unique Galaxy Watch feature is Universal Gestures, which you can find in Accessibility settings. It lets people use gestures instead of touching the watch to operate most functions, but it won’t work when a pattern security lock is enabled.

There are physical buttons too for those who need a tactile touch. The center Quick button can launch an app or exercise with a short or double press. The top button can open any app or utility with a double press, with a long press bringing up Gemini, Bixby, or power-off on the Galaxy Watch. A quick press on the top returns users to the watch face. A short press on the lower button goes back or shows recent apps, while a long press opens Samsung Wallet. You can customize most button functions by going to Settings, then Buttons and gestures.

Stackable Tiles and the app launcher

                    Javi_indy/Getty Images

The Material Expressive Tiles work great on Pixel Watches, but Samsung’s stackable tiles are far more useful in my experience. They allow users to stack up to 11 widgets in one tile. Head to the Galaxy Wearable app on the paired phone, open tile settings, then add up to 11 widgets to it.

Then go to the Galaxy Watch and swipe up or down on a stacked Tile to check out the apps stacked inside. Some app tile options support only one widget per tile, so experiment. The Galaxy Wearable app shows a preview of how the tile and widgets will look on the Galaxy Watch before syncing, which I thought was a nice touch and removes unnecessary friction while customizing.

It also lets users organize their Galaxy Watch app by grid or list view, with a handy toggle to bring the most-used apps to the top of the list. Grid mode works similarly to how Android smartphones handle apps; just drag one app above another to create a new folder. I like to group my apps by what I use most, so I’ll have one folder for postage tracking, one for social media, another for games, etc.

                Exercise focus

                    Asiavision/Getty Images

The Galaxy Watch tracks over 90 sports and activities, so finding the right tracker can be a pain, and you can’t reorder the full list. However, there is a favorites shortcut. Samsung Health lets users pin up to three exercises to get blood pumping faster; just open the Samsung Health app on the connected Android phone, find an exercise, and tap the star icon to favorite it. Users can also rearrange these three favorite slots in the same order as their workout.

Gym heads can also hide exercises they don’t bother with and add their own below the favorites, including custom routines, which they can organize to match how they actually train. All of these customizations automatically sync to the Galaxy Watch, so users don’t need to keep their phone handy when starting a workout.

Personally, I focused on the Mindfulness tracking features, specifically the stress timeline, and used Samsung Health’s breathing exercises and meditation to keep calm. It really helped with my anxiety spikes and to become a calmer parent, so I would urge everyone to give it a try. Being healthy isn’t just about physical fitness, and the mindfulness exercises come in short bursts that fit busy lifestyles like mine.

                Modes and battery life

                    VGV MEDIA/Shutterstock

Modes set conditions on a Galaxy Watch for different times of day, such as commuting, work, and relaxing, adjusting volume, display settings, and more to keep the Galaxy Watch from interfering during certain times.

They sync between the paired smartphone and watch, and users can customize and create their own Modes. Start by opening Modes and Routines in the Galaxy Wearables app on the paired phone, tap the Modes and Routines hyperlink at the bottom to open the utility, then edit an existing Mode such as Sleep, Theater, and more. A custom mode sets start conditions and then runs actions automatically.

Battery life is arguably the most important factor when talking about smartwatches, and the always-on display feature is one of the worst battery drainers. During my time with a Samsung Galaxy Watch, I found that turning off AOD, auto-brightness, GPS, NFC, frequent syncing in Samsung Health, and only having LTE or WiFi functions on when needed really stretches battery life. Of course, the Galaxy Watch needs some of this functionality to be useful, so it’s a matter of living with a new Galaxy Watch for a few days to see what you use it for most.

          Framesira/Shutterstock Buying a smartwatch with near-endless customization out…

[42
166,74
post-862121","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-gadgets","tag-gadgets","tag-technology
["GET
