(WCAX) &#8211; State leaders are creating an action plan to help active servicemembers returning home from active duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The 158th Fighter Wing of the Vermont Air National Guard recently returned home from an extended deployment in the Middle East and Venezuela. Coming home can bring lingering stress and struggles to reintegrate back into civilian life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">To help, Vermont is launching a multi-pronged action plan, including new resources through the 988 help line, resources to help people find providers that match their insurance, and recreational and wellness spaces for servicemembers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Vermont Air National Guard staff say the support they need the most, is connection to friends and family. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe connection to another battle buddy who has understood what you\u2019ve been through is immense,\u201d says Vermont Air National Guard Lt. Col. Scott Detweiler. \u201cIt can be the thing that gets you through to the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">It\u2019s estimated Vermont loses 18 veterans annually to death by suicide. Experts say it\u2019s in part because of a lack of providers in rural settings, and a lack of state and federal funding to support mental health workers. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WCAX.
