Hurricane Odalys, with 90 mph winds<\/a>, is nearly 900 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California and is forecasted<\/a> to turn away from land and weaken.<\/p>\n Polo intensified quickly to become a major hurricane, fueled by warm ocean waters.<\/p>\n \u201cTo have a storm of this intensity persist as a strong hurricane all the way into Baja is unusual,\u201d said Marty Ralph, director of the Center for Western Weather & Water Extremes at UC San Diego\u2019s Scripps Institution of Oceanography.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is partly because the ocean temperatures are so warm off of Mexico,\u201d he said, \u201cthat it\u2019s helping the hurricane retain its structure and strength to a degree that wouldn\u2019t normally be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n The hurricanes developed amid a marine heat wave and a strong El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, the pattern of ocean waters warming in the central and eastern Pacific.<\/p>\n A dog plays in the sand as heavy equipment operators construct berms to protect homes on the Long Beach Peninsula. <\/p>\n (Allen J. Schaben \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/p>\n Hurricane Nolo<\/a> is also bringing strong winds and heavy rains to Hawaii this weekend.<\/p>\n In L.A. and Ventura counties, four- to seven-foot surf is forecasted on Monday and Tuesday, along with strong rip currents and possible coastal flooding, said Lisa Phillips, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service\u2019s Oxnard office.<\/p>\n \u201cOcean water is going to creep up higher than normal,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cWe also have high tides going on at the same time as the higher surf, so that\u2019s when we start to see more of those coastal flooding impacts, beach erosion.\u201d<\/p>\n The weather service issued a coastal flood advisory<\/a> for L.A. and Ventura counties<\/a> on Monday and Tuesday. For Orange and San Diego counties, a coastal flood advisory<\/a> will be in effect Monday through Wednesday.<\/p>\n Forecasters say beachgoers should be cautious, checking with lifeguards on whether it\u2019s safe to swim and staying off rock jetties.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, intense waves from Hurricane Marie<\/a> damaged beachfront homes in parts of Southern California and chewed away at beaches. <\/p>\n In Long Beach, where waves slammed into the seawall and homes, crews have been reinforcing portions of the boardwalk<\/a> and are distributing sandbags<\/a>. <\/p>\n As Polo reaches Mexico, Southern California will probably see some unusual clouds and a few showers, Ralph said.
