Erik Spoelstra had a lot to say today during the Miami Heat\u2019s Media Day. <\/a><\/p>\n

Most of the conversation will be about Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, naturally. Spoelstra has never had a defensive duo as dynamic and dominant as this pair. What stood out to me in Spo\u2019s comments today was how much these guys will carry and shape this team<\/p>\n

He touched on the importance of Miami’s young players and their roles, the work they’ve already done together off the court, and how much competition there could be for roles throughout training camp.<\/p>\n

This isn’t just about adding Giannis and expecting everything else to fall into place. Spoelstra seems to understand there is still a lot that needs to come together, but he also sounds pretty excited about what he has to work with.<\/p>\n

Ryan Conwell Doesn’t Need To Do Too Much<\/p>\n

I’m really interested to see what kind of opportunity Ryan Conwell gets because his path to earning minutes actually feels pretty straightforward.<\/p>\n

“He doesn’t have to overdo it. He has a skill set that lets him fit into a bunch of lineups. He’s an exceptional shooter already. We already know about his competitive nature.”<\/p>\n

That’s probably the best way to describe what Miami needs from Conwell right now. Make shots, compete defensively and take advantage of the opportunities that come to you instead of trying to force your way into the offense.<\/p>\n

His shooting alone should give Spoelstra some interesting lineup possibilities, especially when Miami wants to surround Giannis with as much spacing as possible. Spo also clearly likes the mentality Conwell has brought.<\/p>\n

This Could Be A Huge Year For Bam<\/p>\n

Maybe my favorite Spoelstra quote of the day came when he started talking about Bam and what this season could mean for him.<\/p>\n

“This is a year that Bam can be recognized for everything he does at the highest winning level.”<\/p>\n

We’ve talked about Bam’s impact for years, but sometimes I think people almost take his versatility for granted because we’ve watched him do so many different things for so long. He can switch onto guards, defend wings, protect the paint, facilitate offensively and now even stretch the floor more than he did earlier in his career.<\/p>\n

What he hasn’t had is another defender like Giannis playing next to him.<\/p>\n

Spoelstra speaking a lot about building the defense inside-out around Bam and Giannis.<\/p>\n

Spoelstra spent time talking about “building your defense inside-out,” and how that is something Pat Riley has always emphasized. Well, if you’re trying to build a defense that way, it’s hard to imagine a better foundation than Giannis and Bam.<\/p>\n

If Miami wins at a high level and this defense becomes what it can be, Spo might be right. This could finally be the season where Bam gets recognized nationally for everything he does.<\/p>\n

Miami Has Already Started Building Its Chemistry<\/p>\n

New roles need to be figured out across the roster as different personalities come together and a completely different hierarchy emerges than Miami had before. Giannis and Bam have to learn how to maximize each other, while everyone around them has to figure out where they fit within that partnership.<\/p>\n

That’s why Spoelstra’s comments about the work this group has already done away from the court were encouraging.<\/p>\n

“For any team, your team connection has to be your superpower. It’s not overnight, but those were intentional things by a group, by a locker room, to do that. And that was notable. The rest of it is earned through time and trust.”<\/p>\n

You can only do so much during offseason workouts and team-building activities. Real chemistry comes when you go through difficult stretches together, when roles change, or when somebody has to sacrifice something for the team.<\/p>\n

Pelle Larsson Is Going To Make Spoelstra Find Minutes For Him<\/p>\n

Pelle Larsson is another player I’m really interested to watch this season. <\/p>\n

“He’s relentless, so he’s going to make you make decisions. Not just for the coach, but for the front office. Whatever his role may be, he’s going to continue to impose his will, on the game, on me. The way this team is built fits his competitive nature. He had a tremendous offseason.”<\/p>\n

What I like about Larsson is that he doesn’t necessarily need a huge offensive role to impact a game. He can bring energy, defend, attack when the opportunity is there, and generally make things uncomfortable for the other team.<\/p>\n

Spoelstra’s point about Larsson forcing him to make decisions is probably the biggest compliment a young player can receive. Miami has enough depth that nobody should be handed minutes, so if Larsson wants a larger role, he’ll have to make it difficult for Spo to keep him off the floor.<\/p>\n

The Young Guys Could Determine How Deep Miami Really Is<\/p>\n

Spoelstra also called Miami’s young players “The lifeblood of our depth,” and I thought that was another interesting way to describe this roster.<\/p>\n

When we talk about the Heat’s ceiling, we’re naturally going to talk about Giannis, Bam, and the established veterans. Those are the guys who will determine what happens when Miami gets into a playoff series.<\/p>\n

There will be injuries, back-to-backs, and stretches where Spoelstra needs somebody outside of his normal rotation to give him real minutes. That’s where players like Conwell, Larsson and Nikola Jovic can become incredibly valuable.<\/p>\n

Miami doesn’t need all of them to suddenly turn into stars. Miami will benefit if one or two of these young guys pop. The roster will look so much deeper if the young players become dependable rotational options. <\/p>\n

Jovic’s Next Step Is About More Than Talent<\/p>\n

Jovic remains one of the more interesting players on this roster. Jovic is still only 23 years old, and we have seen flashes of what he can be. <\/p>\n

When asked about Jovic, Spo said, <\/p>\n

“It’s about the resiliency.”<\/p>\n

Spoelstra said things will inevitably go badly at times, and he is working with Jovic on how to respond when that happens on any given NBA night.<\/p>\n

Jovic will have off nights throughout the season and make mistakes, but it’s about how he responds in those moments, which can make or break his career. <\/p>\n
