The ongoing situation with LIV Golf’s future is causing issues with some of the league’s biggest names. Cameron Smith is the latest to speak out…

Cameron Smith says he has been left in the dark by LIV Golf as bosses attempt to rescue the stricken league.

LIV filed for bankruptcy in September, effectively ending all players’ existing contracts, after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund pulled the financial plug.

Officials remain confident that LIV will continue in 2027 with a new player-owned model they’re calling ‘LIV 2.0’. But that’s dependent on keeping a certain number of its top stars – including the likes of Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and 2022 Open champion Smith.

While Rahm and DeChambeau have a route back to the PGA Tour thanks to their most recent major victories, playing opportunities for the likes of Smith will come on the DP World Tour. Indeed, the 33-year-old is teeing up in this week’s Dunhill Links Championship in St Andrews, where he lifted the Claret Jug four years ago.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Smith said his LIV future is “in a bit of limbo”.

“We don’t know, really,” he added. “It’s hard to make a decision when you don’t have at least some of the answers to make the right decision, or [any] decision. We need a few more answers.”

Smith’s recent commitment to a number of DP World Tour events – including last week’s FedEx Open de France, where he missed the cut – suggests he is thinking about life after LIV.

And it’s not just the week-to-week he needs to consider. The Ripper GC captain’s major exemptions for that 2022 Open victory will soon expire. While he can play in golf’s oldest major until he turns 60, Smith’s five-year rights at the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open will expire at the end of 2027 unless he can find some form and move up the world rankings.
