(Courtesy of <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Road closures <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are currently no road closures related to Nolo.<\/p>\n<p>Water conservation<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Water Supply has issued an Essential Water Use Only notice for N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu, Wai\u02bb\u014dhinu, Discovery Harbour and South Point water service areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers in these service areas are being asked to limit water use to essential needs only until further notice due to impacts from flooding associated with Hurricane Nolo. Power outages and possible damage to water system infrastructure are affecting the Department of Water Supply\u2019s ability to provide water to the affected area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers are asked to use water only for essential health and safety needs, including: <\/p>\n<p>Drinking<\/p>\n<p>Cooking and food preparation<\/p>\n<p>Necessary personal hygiene<\/p>\n<p>Necessary sanitation<\/p>\n<p>Other essential household or health needs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until this notice is lifted, customers are asked to discontinue or postpone nonessential uses of water, including: <\/p>\n<p>Irrigation and lawn watering<\/p>\n<p>Washing vehicles <\/p>\n<p>Filling swimming pools or spas<\/p>\n<p>Pressure washing<\/p>\n<p>Other unnecessary or high-volume water use<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing water use will help preserve available water supplies and maintain adequate storage for essential needs. (Photo Credit: Salvation Army)<\/p>\n<p>Shelters<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three Hawai\u2018i County public shelters that were opened ahead of Nolo are closed.<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u2018i County operations<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawai\u2019i County resumed normal operations Sunday as Hurricane Nolo continues its westward trek away from the Big Island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All solid waste facilities, including transfer stations, are scheduled to resume normal operations, and all county parks, including Hilo Municipal Golf Course and Pana\u02bbewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens, also are scheduled to reopen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hele-On bus service is scheduled to resume for Routes 11, 40, 101, 201, 202, 204 and 401. Hele-On\u2019s Paratransit and shared ride taxi programs also will resume regularly scheduled services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe still could see rain and wind impacts through the weekend, so residents should remain cautious,\u201d said Hawai\u2018i County Mayor Kimo Alameda. \u201cOur first responders and partners remain ready to respond to any issues that may develop and we will continue to keep a close watch on this storm as it moves away from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kohala Mountain Road remained closed Saturday because of high winds and possible hazardous conditions. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bigislandnow.com\/file\/bigislandnow\/2025\/07\/Hawaii-Volcanoes-National-Park-marquee.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Hawaii-Volcanoes-National-Park-marquee-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-403084\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>State parks and Hawai\u2018i Volcanoes National Park\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All Hawai\u2018i Department of Land and Natural Resources state parks on the Big Island are closed, including camping, forest reserves, N\u0101 Ala Hele hiking trails, wildlife sanctuaries, natural area reserves, hunting and game management areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawai\u02bbi Volcanoes National Park has reopened most areas along K\u012blauea summit, and Kahuku Unit following Hurricane Nolo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Areas around K\u012blauea and Mauna Loa that remain closed are Hilina Pali Road past the Mauna Iki trailhead, Mauna Loa Road past the second cattleguard, K\u012bpukapuaulu Trail, and the Sulphur Banks Bridge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trails at the Kahuku Unit will open as staff finish assessments. Some communities on Hawai\u02bbi Island experienced flooding, high winds and temporary road closures, but campus assessments indicate that schools are ready to reopen and roads serving affected communities are accessible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Closures, cancellations and postponements<\/p>\n<p>Courts and Judiciary operations on Hawai\u02bbi Island (3rd Circuit): The courts were closed Friday. All hearings and trials scheduled during the closures will be rescheduled. Court orders will be issued extending filing deadlines affected by the closures. New dates will be announced.<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u2018i Island libraries: All of them are closed Saturday. Programs also canceled. Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/librarieshawaii.org\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"librarieshawaii.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">state libraries website<\/a> for updates.<\/p>\n<p>Several miles of <a href=\"https:\/\/bigislandnow.com\/2026\/09\/25\/police-kohala-mountain-road-closed\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bigislandnow.com\/2026\/09\/25\/police-kohala-mountain-road-closed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250)<\/a>, between Waimea and H\u0101w\u012b , were closed Friday night because of dangerous driving conditions caused by high winds. All other major roadways and highways are open.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists are advised to continue to anticipate potential hazardous conditions and possible road closures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gov. Josh Green\u2019s request for a <a href=\"https:\/\/bigislandnow.com\/2026\/09\/25\/governors-request-for-pre-landfall-presidential-emergency-declaration-approved-for-nolo\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bigislandnow.com\/2026\/09\/25\/governors-request-for-pre-landfall-presidential-emergency-declaration-approved-for-nolo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pre-landfall presidential emergency declaration<\/a> covering all four of the state\u2019s counties was approved Friday by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hawai\u02bbi Island college and university campuses<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">University of Hawai\u2018i at Hilo, Hawai\u2018i Community College and all other university units were closed during the weekend.
