Brandel Chamblee believes that there is still an opportunity for Phil Mickelson to be welcomed back into the fold by the majority of golf fans should he apologise for his role in LIV Golf’s rise.

Mickelson has not been seen at a LIV Golf event since March, with his appearance in South Africa proving to be his only start of the season. He had been dealing with a private matter in the early part of the year.

Which Presidents Cup players do you NOT want to see at the 2027 Ryder Cup? 👀

The Ryder Cup at Adare Manor is less than a year away! ⛳

""

You would have to go back to 1989 for the last time Mickelson went an entire season without playing in one of the majors. That was the year that Rory McIlroy was born.

From the outside, it appears that there are now serious question marks over whether Mickelson will play in another tournament.

The uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf‘s future adds another layer to the story. Mickelson’s decision to hold talks with the league in the months after he made history at the 2021 PGA Championship severely damaged his reputation.

And as there is no question that many players would have been inspired to join LIV because of Mickelson’s interest, it is difficult to see any way back for him as a figure associated with the PGA Tour.

Speaking on the We Need a Fourth podcast, Brandel Chamblee was asked whether he has tarnished his legacy for good. Interestingly, Chamblee claimed that there is still an opportunity for the 56-year-old.

“I don’t know about forever. I think we’re in a pretty forgiving world. He’s obviously got his demons that he fights, and I wouldn’t wish them on anybody, but he’s not alone in fighting demons. I think if he hadn’t gone to LIV, he would have been Arnold Palmer reincarnated. He would have been Ryder Cup captain numerous times. He would have been an honorary starter at Augusta. He would have been the lead analyst at CBS. He would have been the pied piper everywhere he went,” he said.

“But I think if he came back and said ‘look, I’ve made mistakes, I’ve tried to deal with them. Sorry for the damage I’ve caused. The game’s been so good to me. And for the rest of my life, I’m going to try and be good back to it’, I think everyone would put their arms around him and go ‘welcome back, sorry you had so much trouble, hope you get your life straightened out’. Life’s hard, it doesn’t matter who you’re talking into, running into. Everybody’s dealing with something. Everybody’s got some battle that they’ve faced or will face.

“I started doing commentary in 2004, so 2004 until Phil left, I used to say Phil was a gift to the game of golf. His talent, his showmanship, his look at me quality, it was incredible. What a talent, what an amazing talent.”

Golf can cope without Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods being prominent figures

Few would have ever thought when Mickelson was making his way down the 72nd hole at Kiawah Island that he would be in his current position five years later.

As Chamblee suggests, it looked nailed on that he would lead the American Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black, while he would have almost certainly been a Presidents Cup captain, too.

Many would have expected Mickelson and Tiger Woods to renew their rivalry on PGA Tour Champions. Instead, there is good reason to think that neither should play in a competitive event again.

Perhaps the pair will surprise us again in the future. However, there may be plenty of fans who feel that too much damage has been done and it is time to move on from two legendary figures who have undoubtedly changed the game.
